X Factor is a distant memory for the supremely talented Lucie Jones, who has been performing all-singing, dancing and acting routines on stage for the past seven years. The shows have highlighted just how versatile the Welsh actress is. And though she now may dream of starring alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Matthew McConaughey her mum delights in reminding her that it was the Gareth Gates poster she would gaze at in her bedroom at night when she dreamed of meeting someone famous.
You’ve acted on stage in Ghost, The Wedding Singer, Rent, We Will Rock You, An American Psycho, Les Miserables…the list is impressive. Do you think theatre land is your forte? What’s the best thing about acting on stage and the most worrying?
I have always loved theatre, since I was a little kid. My mum would take me to see every touring product that came to town – even if it was something I wasn’t necessarily interested in. I think that is why I have such a broad taste in theatre! I LOVE being in a musical. But I also love doing plays and screen work. It’s so exciting to be on stage and in the moment. There is no other form of acting that will give you such an instant rush and the nerves and excitement you feel on stage are reserved for that exact form of art. What is scary about it keeps it exciting – fear of the unknown! I have been on stage and had things go so terribly wrong that we have had to think on our feet and improvise BIG time and the audience never knows anything has happened untoward. Love it.
Ever been any funny or embarrassing things happen on stage. Come on, give us some examples.
Oh God SO MANY. Things happen every day! I actually have a folder on my laptop that contained loads of funny and embarrassing and cute things that happen at work – onstage and backstage. I’ve had my costume get stuck to another actor during a scene so we’ve had to hobble around the stage together, show stops because someone’s forgotten to put their microphone on (not naming any names…), people getting knocked out on stage, sound systems failing, audience members crying out at inappropriate moments – seriously so many. One day I’ll tell you them all…
If you could act in a film who would your dream co-star be?
I really love Jennifer Lawrence. I would love to be in a room with her while she acts as I know I would learn so much. Matthew McConaughey too. Also Robert De Niro. And Meryl Streep. Sean Connery too. SO MANY DON’T MAKE ME PICK! WHO did you have posters of when you were young? What was it about them? OK don’t laugh. My walls were VERY versatile. Gareth Gates was a solid (which my mother took GREAT pleasure in telling him when we worked together at Les Miserables) as Pop Idol was totally my bag. My parents bought me a big poster of Audrey Hepburn which I still have up in my old room actually. I used to cut out the pages that had a few people I liked on them. Girl bands, actors, models. But then in with them I had Sum 41, My Chemical Romance and Death Cab for Cutie. Yep. Smorgasbord.
Legally Blonde seems like a fun show to be in. The ‘bend and snap’ routine is hilarious – what’s the funniest/oddest/most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done to attract the opposite sex?
Ha! Really good question! Legally Blonde is the most fun I have ever had on stage in a musical. It truly is an amazing show. Its not just light, fluffy and pink like some people think, though. It has much heart and moves people more than they expect. As for attracting the opposite sex, Ive probably done some really embarrassing things as I can be a total goof and really awkward. Never the bend and snap though… ARE you a girly girl like Elle Woods?
What do you do / wear that’s girly / not girly?
I wouldn’t say I was massively either way. I get my nails done when I have time and I do enjoy a good pamper day with my friends at the spa. But I also love getting muddy in the fi eld with my dogs and going for a pint with my dad. Mixed bag.
You were 10 years old when Legally Blonde hit the screen. Did you watch it and what do you remember about it?
Yeah I did see it pretty young. I can’t remember seeing it for the fi rst time but I remember having the video and watching it over and over and over and over…I know every word to the movie and I LOVE Selma Blair. OBVIOUSLY Reese Witherspoon is queen though.
After Legally Blonde any plans to release more music?
Elle Woods isn’t taken seriously at the start of the show – is that something you’ve ever faced in real life?
After I did the X Factor I had to fight hard for a long time to gain credibility within the music industry. It is true that some people do these reality shows and the music world doesn’t work out for them so they say “Oh I’ll just do a musical then”. NOT COOL GUYS! Therefore we have a few less than capable people taking the leads in shows because they put bums on seats and the producers will obviously see that as a great thing. DONT GET ME WRONG it is really cool that these celebs bring in a different audience who may not be in to theatre otherwise – that’s always a win. But it does leave a stigma behind that people like me (who absolutely love what they do and want to do it forever) have to fight to gain the respect that other actors get by playing these roles. I identify with Elle in that way! Haters gonna hate. Prove them wrong with your actions!

Have you ever been out with a guy who’s worn a thong like Enrique the pool cleaner and is it a turn on or turn off for you? What would you prefer guys to wear when they’re by the pool?
A man in a thong is not really my thing. I did once date a guy who shaved his legs…that didn’t do it for me. If I didn’t do mine every day he was smoother than me. Not for me that. I like a surfer dude look! Shorts are perfect.
Blonde or brunette – which do you prefer being and what do you receive more of a reaction from?
It honestly doesn’t make a difference to me. I am a natural brunette so have spent more time with brown hair than blonde but I loved my hair blonde too. Wearing the wigs as Elle is so much fun.
If Elle Woods was on X Factor what would she sing?
Something really empowering for sure. “I’m Every Woman” or something like that.
If you could sum up Elle’s character what would it be? Would she be the type of person you would be friends with in real life?
I have friends who are so much like Elle Woods. Elle is amazingly optimistic, hard working, driven and wonderfully kind and loving. She has a rocky start but who doesn’t? She learns quickly that there is more to life than “being blonde and being hot” and she accepts everyone for exactly who they are. That in itself is reason enough to want to be her bestie.
