Description

Wood that has been oiled in the last year should be allowed to weather for at least one year or until the wood preservative is able to penetrate through to the timber Areas that have been affected by mould, algae or fungi should be treated with Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner It contains active ingredients effective against moulds, wood destroying and wood discolouring fungi as well as against wood boring insects.

Apply by brush onto timber at a rate of 5 m2 per litre. Apply in 2 – 3 coats depending on the porosity of the wood species. Do not apply if rain is forecast in the next 48 hours to allow time for Roxil Wood Preserver to dry and the application of a top coat. Wood preserver is designed to be applied on freshly sawn or sanded wood. You’ll get the best out of it if you sand down whatever wood you use it on, or at least pressure-wash and scrub it. Like paint, wood preservers come in solvent-based and water-based varieties. Each type has advantages and disadvantages.

Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Only apply in temperatures of between 10°C and 30°C. Shake or stir well prior to and during application to ensure a consistent colour.

If protecting the natural colour of the wood is important, use the clear preservative then overcoat with Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra or Fiddes Exterior High Build Wood Oil. Solvent-based wood preservers such as Barrettine Premier and Ronseal Total tend to absorb more deeply into wood, and decorators say they have longer-lasting effects. However they’re more smelly than water-based stuff, and tend to be less safe for the environment. That said, the most eco-friendly preserver in our line-up, Osmo Wood Protector, is solvent-based but uses safe organic ingredients, which makes it perfect for kitchen worktops. Can I use wood preserver to liven up my old shed? It is moisture regulating and provides an adhesive surface for subsequent treatment with finishing paints or stains (top coat).
