Description

In my experience the 28″ and 23″ chopping axes can chop or split up to around a 12” log. So they can fell a tree or break down firewood and can be used as a general “work axe”.

Unlike the chopping axes, the splitting axes are only for splitting. But they are very popular because they are very effective and affordable. I think they are the best value splitting axe on the market (and one of the best all-around). UPDATE 5-9-2014: Since resetting the edge, my X7 hatchet has held up much better. I can chop extensively--even into hard wood--without significant damage to the metal/edge; however, there is still a minor proneness to edge rolling that requires resharpening more often than it should. Regardless, it appears that only the first 3/16" of the metal head was inexcusably soft--still a major issue, since consumers should not have to grind away almost a quarter inch of metal to yield a usable hatchet. And, I’ll say it again, if you’re not concerned about the money at all, the Gransfors Bruk wildlife hatchet is perfect for you. It’s something you can use your whole life and pass it on to your kids. As evidence – I cut my thumb with this axe like a dumbass processing kindling, ONE DAY AFTER I finished this article. The hatchet from Prandi is another remarkable buy in terms of quality and price. It’s similar in comparison to the Husqvarna but it has a different head pattern and it costs a little more. Also, by creating a loop on the handle you’re effectively giving yourself a great means of hanging the hatchet where you want it. It’s always good to know exactly where your tool is when you’re not using it. Is it Worth the Money? While you would be forgiven for calling a hatchet an axe, there are some loose differences between axes and hatchets which are still up for debate. Senior editor at Popular Mechanics, Roy Berendsohn defines a hatchet as simply, “a small one-hand axe used for chopping”, which I would have to agree with. Designed in Billnas, Finland, building on more than three-and-a-half centuries of the world's best forged tools

The X7 is probably the better for basic car camping – where your wood comes pre-cut and you might just need to pop a few pieces apart for kindling. The X10 is more of a forest axe and chopper that can also be a kindling maker. It’s 17.5” (ish) in length and can be used one or two-handed. The larger head is uniquely longer and thinner than all the other Fiskars axes, making it well suited for the wilderness and bushcraft. It’s a very versatile chopper. The first thing you’ll notice about the X25’s axe head is that it’s protected by a plastic sheath. This cover is useful for protecting the bit and stopping people and pets from accidentally cutting themselves. Its ultra light and durable FiberComp handle minimises fatigue and makes the axe virtually unbreakable.

The Fiskars X21 axe is ideal for splitting logs of up to 30 cm and above and is a great all-rounder that can handle most heavy-duty chopping tasks. The head is the same width as the X17 above, which means this axe can be used for more detailed woodwork and smaller chopping tasks. I would get the X7. I was originally skeptical but the over-mold does make a difference, and the price is almost identical. Gerber Freescape 14 The hook at the bottom is smaller than the other models so you can hold that in a half-hand manner and get a little more clearance. But the hollow end of the handle can dig into your palm and isn’t super comfortable for extended use this way.In this Fiskars X-Series Axes Comparison Guide, we explain what each different model is designed for and what it is best used for. You will learn the difference between a hatchet and a camping axe as well as come out knowing which axe you need. Fiskars X-Series Axes Comparison

Water can easily escape through the gaps in the sheath. This feature helps reduce the onset of rust and helps keep the blade in good condition. Axe head The longer and heavier the axe, the more momentum it can build and the more potential power it can deliver. But the larger axes are less portable, and harder to manipulate for detailed tasks.

Fiskars In The Field

The X25 axe blade isn’t perfect. Compared to more expensive hatchets it has its blemishes and its cutting edge won’t offer the same level of sharpness. But for the price, it offers excellent value for money. The most important part, of course, is the cutting edge. After all, the main reason you get an axe is for chopping wood. Whether you’re splitting kindling, felling a tree, or splitting firewood, you need a decent bit. The hollow handle makes for decent storage space for small items. It’s not a game-changer, mind you, but with a little ingenuity you can craft a loop through the holes to keep whatever you place in the handle from falling out.
