Description

The short form is that “Bitcoin failed… because all of this is based in crank ideas that don’t work. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. This is a quick read; if you're already skeptical of the technology (as I was), you will have your biases confirmed. Was der Autor hier und auf seinem Blog schreibt, hab ich in dieser Qualität und Tiefe noch nirgends gefunden. Full disclosure, I hew towards the later definition although I can see how the 2nd camp can also claim some support.

It offers many cautionary tales for would-be investors, and it's laugh-out-loud funny in places too. His depictions of some of the principals in the cryptocurrency space could easily be describing DJs and bands. This requires some technical understanding of the language of IT, but even without that you will get a sense of what is happening.

Another small fault of the book is that it clearly grew out of Internet discussions and as such isn't entirely consistent with the tone you'd expect from non-fiction books, but that's kind of minor. Bitcoin, blockchains, Ethereum and smart contracts — what these ideas are, why they don’t work in practice, and the sort of people attracted to them.

Well, I still don't entirely get it, but I don't know if I could come any closer to understanding than this given my level of technical know-how. I’ve seen a quote to the effect that crypto-currencies in general seem to be trying to recreate every scam, con, and mistake ever encountered in any financial system in recorded history. Sadly, they’re also attractive to scammers: the concept is complicated enough that you can bamboozle laypeople, but not so complicated that you can’t fake the jargon with a little practice. Also, dismissing something new entirely due to failures when in it's infant stages is not a mindset I share.
