It is a fantastic find. For starters the staff were lovely, they even made me a coffee in a real mug. I was able to care for my client in a peaceful atmosphere both inside in the cool and outside in the glorious sunshine.

The locals are friendly and welcoming all the... time. Defiantly recommend if you want friendly service and a warm welcome and made to feel at home. When the Woodcutter dropped his ax in the river, I did not understand what was going on. The River God was strange and not well defined with purpose, then the three different axes didn't make any sense and I found it completely annoying but read on...

You persuaded him! A boy, a naïve young man at the very most, in your employ, in your care, probably dependent upon you emotionally as well as economically! And you persuaded him to become a killer. I bet that called on all your Ciceronian skills!” Wilkie Collins.

OVERVIEW/ANALYSIS: The Woodcutter by Kate Danley is a book that slipped me by when it was originally self-published by the author in 2010. I happened across it recently when it was rereleased by 47North. I was very much intrigued by the storyline as it reminded me of The Book Of Lost Things by John Connolly which is one of my all time favorites. One of the more reliable phenomena of world cinema is the regular appearance of strange but benign UFOs from the North. (One thinks of Bent Hamer’s Kitchen Stories and O’Horten from Norway, or Noi The Albino and Rams from Iceland – a country that seems to send out odder tragi-comical satellites every year.) Now here’s one from Finland – with the famously glum Finnish humour stamped all over it. Deadpan philosophical fable The Woodcutter Story is the first feature by Mikko Myllylahti, best known as writer of Juho Kuosmanen’s The Happiest Day In The Life Of Olli Maki. Starring that film’s lead, Jarkko Lahti, The Woodcutter Story is perhaps too self-deprecating and calculatedly wayward to score the cult prestige it might seem destined for, but fests and platforms with an eye for minor-key weirdness should find it a modestly dependable audience-puller. Me for one, I think this was truly a masterpiece. The director was already acclaimed, but this might be his best work yet. The performances, cinematography and effects are amazing - it's amazing how you can make something so simple look so great. They informed me about the plans ahead to upgrade the entire pub so they will be able to serve food (I do love a pub lunch). The novel changes from a psychological thriller to a hardboiled crime story, with all the high and low points of the genre. Alva discovers she’s sexually attracted to Wolf, despite believing he’s a pedophile. Coincidences make for convenient plot points. The final plot twist delivered by Imogen seems to come out of nowhere and isn’t necessary.
