Typically you’d expect to see the latest in fashion from the likes of Vogue, Elle or Harper’s Bazaar. However, if you want a true insight into the future of the design world where else is better to go to than a showcase for fashion students? These students will be entering the world of fashion upon graduation, so why not get a sneak peak?
Glasgow Caledonian University will be hosting their fashion show on Monday, 1st June 2015 within the Carnegie Lecture Theatre. There will be two catwalks in the evening, one at 6pm and one at 8pm, showcasing the work of second, third and fourth year students [BA (Hons) Fashion Business].
Second year students will be showing their technical abilities regarding both pattern cutting and sewing through their shirt dress design brief. The final results will show the amount of variations one simple concept can have, whether this be sleeves, collars, fabric or embellishment. Below you will find photos from last year’s catwalk showing the designs of students who embarked upon the same brief. [Designer credit from left: Rachel Molloy, Pinja Salmi and Gayla Pollock]
Third year students will be showcasing creations from their upcycling assessment brief in partnership with Anna Cirignaco of Eleganza Sposa of Glasgow. The leading luxury gown retailer in Scotland.
Students were asked to recreate a wedding dress based around the theme of contrast, seeking their own source of inspiration by which to base their designs. The donated wedding dresses have since became trousers, skirts, capes, leotards… the list goes on. Embellishment of the creations encompasses materials such as bubblewrap, flowers, camera film, clock pieces, fairy lights, plastic, CDs and keys. Each piece tells a story. Prepare yourself for some extreme cases of artistic expression!
Find some preview shots of the garments involved below. These images were taken by the students prior to their assessment presentation. [Designers credit, beginning from top left down: Karis Leitch, Gayla Pollock, Kimberely Gibson, Paula Meechan, Fiona Kennedy, Ellie Nairn and Stephanie Gill]
Fourth year students will be displaying a capsule range of summer clothing. The brief itself intended for the leading Chinese manufacturer “kashion”, who’s customers include Littlewoods, Miss Sixty and United Colors of Benetton. Expect womenswear showing the skills and creativity inspired from four years of study at Glasgow Caledonian University. This year’s graduates will be determined to show their full potential as they go into the world of employment.
After the blood, sweat and tears of students at the sewing machines [I speak from personal experience], why not get yourself some tickets and appreciate the hard work.
Tickets are available for free on https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/gcu-fashion-show-2015-tickets-16990189113. Maximum four tickets per purchaser.
