Description

At times, other than geometrical designs are also embroidered and become stylized because the darning stitch is worked in straight lines. Showcasing phulkaris from the East and West Punjab, it highlights the difference in their development. I always say I’m not a fan of insta poets but less than a handful of times I am surprised to find that I really enjoyed a collection of work. The thread came from Kashmir, Afghanistan, and Bengal and was dyed in the big cities by the lalaris.

Others like Dilli Darwaza, Shalimar Char, and Chaurasia Baghs depicted the layout of well-known Mughal Gardens. The Phulkari embroidery is done with the use of a darn stitch on the wrong side of coarse cotton cloth known as ‘khaddar’ with colored silken thread. It was a little too insta poetry for me - a lot of space was wasted on bite size poems that could be better described as tweets or insta captions. This phulkari uses navy blue as the base color with geometrical motifs embroidered in white floss giving an impression of silken mirror, that is, reshmusheesha.

Phulkari, which literally translates to ‘flower work’,is a unique style or technique of embroidery particular to Punjab.

Thind makes reference to the contributions made by Mohinder Singh Randhawa in promoting the preservation of Phulkari art. Split across six sections, ‘Phulkari’ touches on everything from male mental health to the anxiety of pregnancy, speaking on love, death, migration and more. Con la independencia económica, las mujeres se empoderan aumentando su papel en las esferas política, social, educativa, de género y económica. Panchranga Bagh: Panchranga means ‘five colors’ and so, this type of phulkari is decorated with chevrons of five different colors. The first was a loosely woven khaddar with coarse yarns, which stood in contrast to "Halwan" (a lightweight and finely woven Khaddar), and the third was "Chaunsa Khaddar," which was woven with finer yarns and was chosen for "Bhag".
