About this deal

Things pretty much go according to plan, and this brings the battle to Almaraz and the French-occupied fortresses on each of the banks of the Tagus River. Sergeant Richard Sharpe is on a routine mission to collect ammunition from a friendly fort when he and his men are abruptly thrown into chaos.

The binding design, resplendent in black and gold foils, features one of the enemies’ spectacular war elephants, while the historical note by Cornwell discusses how Sharpe’s Triumph contains a ‘crucial moment’ in Richard Sharpe’s lively career. It’s so obvious that the publishers were desperate for a new novel that’s what Bernard did, only he wrote it in daze.He was doubtless quoting from Sun Tzu’s Strategy of War: ‘To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence. Charmed Life arrives in an explosion of magic in this edition illustrated by Alison Bryant and introduced by Katherine Rundell.

With this going well back in time from where I last left Sharpe after Waterloo, there was some added poignancy around meeting back up with a few characters around Sharpe who would later die. This is set back in the middle of the Peninsular War - The Bridge at Alamaraz in May 1812 to be precise - putting it after Sharpe's Company (The Siege of Badajoz, January - April 1812) but before Sharpe's Sword (the Salamanca Campaign of June and July 1812). This first ever illustrated edition of Sharpe’s Triumph, produced in series with Sharpe’s Tiger, features a map of India at the time and a battle plan of the fateful conflict, as well as action-packed illustrations by series artist Douglas Smith. Now, let me say that it's still in good company even among the lower Sharpe's entries and I am always game for yet more Sharpe's adventures.
