Happy Valley airs weekly on Sundays at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The final episode will air on Sunday, February 5. Sadly, this will be the third and final series of Happy Valley, according to the creators. Executive producer Will Johnston said the series creator Sally Wainwright and star Sarah Lancashire had agreed it “would only return once more”. Although the show is well written, its main selling point is that it revolves around two standout performances. As Norman, Freddie Highmore does a terrific job of foreshadowing the monster he will eventually become (taxidermy, anyone?) while remaining sweet and sympathetic throughout. He brings a classmate flowers when her father ends up in hospital, but he is also becoming aware that there is something wrong with him. "Sometimes you hear and you see things that aren't there," explains Norma. "It's like some kind of trance or something." Former Sowerby Bridge Police Station and Park Wood Crematorium in Elland also served as filmsets. Both series one and two won the Baftas for drama series and writing, while Sarah Lancashire won the leading actress prize for the second series. Happy Valley fans were delighted when the hugely anticipated third and final series returned to our screens on New Years Day after an almost seven year hiatus.

We’re really not doing any more. You’re a few weeks away from the ending but when you get to it, I really hope you’ll feel content that if that’s the last you ever see of the characters of Happy Valley, it was a big way to go out.”

In the meantime, our outspoken heroine went ominously quiet around the house – giving Ryan and “weak, spineless” Clare the near-silent treatment. She deleted kisses from texts and refused to reciprocate affection. It was a shatteringly low-key portrayal of bone-deep hurt. She’d “never liked that Neil” and clung to the faint hope that Clare was somehow being forced to betray her. In the summer of 2016, series one of Happy Valley was released on Netflix in the UK and is currently repeated on the channel W. A year later, series two was released on Netflix in the UK.

On 22 November 2012, Ben Stephenson announced the commissioning of Happy Valley for BBC One. The programme was written by Sally Wainwright, produced by Karen Lewis, and directed by Euros Lyn, Sally Wainwright and Tim Fywell. [4] [5] There are also a number of new faces including Amit Shah as the troubled pharmacist, Faisal Bhatti, that has got himself in too deep, Mark Stanley as abusive teacher and husband, Rob Hepworth, and Mollie Winnard as Rob Hepworth's desperate wife, Joanna Hepworth, who was brutally murdered in the last episode after bribing Faisal to help her escape her cruel and controlling husband.Although crime and violence propel the narrative, there is always enough space for relationships to be explored in depth. Some of the most touching scenes involve Cawood and her sister Claire. A few simple lines of dialogue convey multitudes about how close and caring people can be, yet still get each other wrong. "I don't know why I ever listen to a word you say," yells Catherine, after a party thrown to cheer her up goes disastrously wrong. "I said I didn't want a sodding party." After another distressing assault – no wonder their traumatised daughter never takes her coat off – Joanna was understandably desperate to escape the monstrous Rob. She pleaded with her lover-cum-diazepam dealer, Faisal Bhatti (Amit Shah), to make good on a vague promise to set her up in a flat.

The police based BBC drama has earnt itself an army of fans who couldn't contain their excitement as no-nonsense police Sergeant Catherine Cawood, played by ex-Coronation Street star Sarah Lancashire, returned to our screens once more.
