Illustrated in otherworldly mixed-media 3D shoebox dioramas that use unique and exquisite collage art, this quirky and colorful picture book spins a new story from the common East Asian fable of the rabbit in the moon. Baek lights them with glowing touches of the moon, lemony yellow lights that illuminate the darkness and provide comfort and connections.

The paper figures are various animals who all live together in a crowded apartment building with their own interesting apartments to look into as well. Inspired by Korean folklore, this bedtime story uses cutout ink characters within detailed dioramas to depict a magical summer night. An intriguing premise in which the moon phases occur by melting, and then fertilizing a new plant that releases a tiny grain of new moon.

The intelligence of Granny and her willingness to share and help make for an unusual folktale of community both nearby and far. But then the rabbits show up and say they don't have a home anymore, so the creature plants a flower that blooms and creates the home that the rabbits needed again. Marcie, an LE teacher, enjoyed Rules of Civility by Amor Towles (one of my favorites), Leave the World Behind by Rumann Alam, and Math Games with Bad Drawings by Ben O rlin. One sweltering summer night, while the many residents of one apartment building are struggling to fall asleep, the moon begins to melt. After working in advertising and multimedia for children, she began to create her own picture books when her daughter was born. The story of a hot night, a melting moon, and an ingenious way to cool down, it’s the perfect summer story. The language isn’t quite as basic, though, and as it rendered entirely in dialogue—Mother Pig’s lines are italicized—adult readers will have to work hard at their vocal characterizations for it to make any sense.

And this summer, I read Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr, which might be one of the best books I’ve read in a long time! Astrid Lindgren Award winner Baek draws gently on Korean folklore while keeping her feet firmly planted in the modern day, with some delicious visual texture. She collects the melting moon in a pot and when the power goes out decides to make it in to moon pops to cool herself and the rest of the apartment complex cool. This would make a great classroom read for young elementary school children learning about folklore from around the world. It's a Korean folktale, but I don;t think it can be too old as freezers, air conditioning haven'[t been around too long. Not particularly persuasive, but this might coax a few young porkers to get their trotters into the tub. My only quibble, was if the moon melted (and was thus liquid), but all the power went out, how did granny manage to freeze the moon pops? I loved the characterization of Granny as someone who can solve any problem, whether it is the heat or the loss of the rabbits’ home on the moon.
