Have shared lighting needs with other plants in the terrariums (bright, indirect being the most common)

Once all other elements are added, you can add in your springtails and turn your mossarium bioactive. Naturally, that would mean the terrarium is on your door rather than your wall, but close enough, right? That being said, they all enjoy similar environments, and this isn’t a botany master’s – so let’s move on. The pointy-tipped Sword-fern adds complexity and charisma to the terrarium. Sword ferns stand out with their sharp edges and brilliantly green foliage. Most people are familiar with the Boston Sword Fern ( Nephrolepsis exaltata), but this common houseplant isn’t the best choice for a terrarium only because it gets quite large. Some, but not all, tap waters contain high levels of chemicals such as chlorine.Such chemicals can be detrimental to the development of your fluffy friends and turn them brown. Create a preserved moss terrarium. Who said a terrarium needed to be living any way? Some incredible terrarium artists exclusively use preserved moss and lichen. And with preserved moss lasting for years, it’s a maintenance-free project with serious longevity. Terra Living is the ultimate company if you need moss terrarium ideas& inspiration. They prove it doesn’t need to be living to look stunning. (Image Credit: TerraLiving on Etsy). A terrestrial Bromeliad with an astonishing number of options for leaf size, shape, color, and patterns, there is sure to be one that fits perfectly in your terrarium. The foliage of Earth Stars is a flat rosette with stripes in pink, red, green, or white. To properly maintain it, you’d need to live in an appropriate climate, and you’d need to grow it outside or in a fridge… With lights… Open terrariums are a great craft kit to get started if you're a beginner, as they offer a better airflow for plants so you don't have to worry about issues that arise from condensation – such as mould. Open terrariums are best suited to plants that require dry and arid conditions and direct sunlight – such as cacti, air plants and succulents. So if you fancy growing yourself a mini desert that will last for years to come, you totally can.

Heating– much like with light, you must be careful not to overheat your mossarium.Keep it away from artificial heat sources like radiators and electrical appliances, and do not let it ‘cook’ in the sun.Remember, the glass will act like a greenhouse. Getting a good terrarium substrate mixisn’t nearly as important for moss as with other closed terrarium plants. A visually complex piece of stoneor driftwoodcan add some serious flavor to a mossarium scene. Dragon stoneis my go-to, but maple leaf stone and knife stone are fantastic too. It’s, of course, not an extensive list (there are around 12,000 species of moss, after all), and many others would suit too. But it’s a great starting point for some of the best and most available types. Using multiple types of moss creates the most visual impact. To do this, place it in a bowl of water and soak for 10 minutes until any stowaway critters have come to the surface (if fresh) or for 30 minutes until thoroughly moist (if dried). Gently squeeze out excess water before use.

There are some genuinely spectacular Marcgravia species, with fascinating foliage coloring from vibrant green to bronze to pastel to variegated. These are just a couple favorites:Cute little spice jars can be turned into mini moss terrariums. Visit Red Handled Scissors to find out more! 20. Cactus Terrarium There are a few very similar mosses in the Thuidiumclassification, and they’re easily mistaken for one another. This lovely moss is a Thuidium – but I can’t say for sure which. It could easily be Thuidium tamariscinum or delicatulum. Brake fern fronds tend to be brittle and struggle in indoor climates, but the humidity of a terrarium solves this issue easily. There are close to 300 species of Pteris ferns, and most don’t get more than 1-2 feet tall. This means there are lots to choose from for the terrarium. Create this cute miniature greenhouse-like thing using a glass terrarium. The tutorial is here! 22. Air Plant Terrarium With animals, there’s inherently a lot more to consider. Feeding is the obvious one, but also climate regulation, which usually involves automated systems.

DIY this moss terrarium following this idea here. Youcan also use it as a centerpiece. 31. Freshwater Terrarium Spikemoss foliage is small, lush, deep green, and very moss-like or fern-like in appearance – it depends a lot on the species. Some favorites are: So as you’d imagine, live reindeer moss isn’t an ideal fit for warm, humid tropical terrariums, despite it being closely associated with the hobby. Cladonia rangiferinawill notthrive in a warm environment.Rainbow Marcgravia Sintenisii – The leaves emerge a light red and then morph to green. Each leaf matures at its own pace, giving the overall appearance of a rainbow as they all slowly transform from red to green. A very fun plant!
