About this deal

I've read several how-to guides on the net (including the excellent one on this thread) but none of them go into much detail about this bit so I'm assuming I'm doing something horribly wrong! I would start from the cabin end, have a look at the cable attachment and see if it's broken at that end, if it is use some pliers/build a lever to pull the cable through if not you'll have to start pulling the grill off. I’m summising it is also because it doesn’t give enough flexibility to the new lock module after you have installed it into your car and it pushes it out of placement. There is no real tension to it, you should be be able to remove it just by pulling on the normal piece of metal where the bonnet lock catches onto when you shut it after this it’s just a case of extracting it.

Then went through the open/close process (wihtout actually closing the bonnet) many times (approx 20). Take the mechanism off and clean it, soak it overnight in paraffin or diesel then clean it with a wire brush. The trademarks "Volkswagen" , "VW" and its logo are registered to Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft in Germany and Volkswagen Group Limited. It may be that one of the bolts is hidden and you will need to drill a neat and tidy hole through the plastic to get at it.check if it's the bonnet catch (behind the VW badge) that isn't closing properly and holding the bonnet down. The latch gradually got easier to release and eventually it wasn't necessary to press down on the clip with the screw driver. If your cable is sill attached to the catch, it looks like if you grabbed this with a pair of pliers or mole grips, and tugged it towards the drivers side (left, as you look at it), it would activate the catch.

Unscrew the three T27 torx bolts holding the bonnet latch mechanism in place noting each bolt's position. So I took it off again and went back to using the claw and then greased the latch up (especially when the clip is in the locked position - you can get down in the back of it with WD40 and grease). If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag. Once the series of holes are created (recommend a hexagonal shape around the screw) then remove the centre plastic piece. New: A brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged item in original retail packaging (where packaging .Anyway, last week, bonnet wouldn't open, let alone close, no matter how hard I tugged the release or jiggled the bonnet. Refitting is a complete reversal of the removal procedure, before refitting the grill to the car, it is best to make sure the lock opens. Hi, I know this has been mentioned before, but even so I can't find the answers I need and I'm DESPO!

Ensure that the plastic guide attached to the end of the release cable is clipped on to the new latch mechanism. It wasn't too difficult to do and fixed the issue Leveraging the unit out using a screwdriver through the VW badge was the hardest bit. I was unaware how the locking mechanism worked so just assumed it required some oil / lubrication like WD40. The cable close to where it meets the latch is fixed inside a rigid plastic part, I suspect this may be where I'm going wrong - should this be attached to the catch or to the car in some way? I pulled it out and it broke in two, cable is identical to that found on a bicycle so no surprise it will rust if expose to water and the elements.I ended up having to unscrew the unit that contains the catch, take it out then use a lot of WD40 to clean all the rubbish that had built up inside that was stopping it from closing over properly. So I guess I've displaced it from clips somewhere up behind the dashboard - Does anyone know if the cable is indeed clipped into place on its way to the engine area? Once the brake cleaner has been used, apply grease generously throughout the lock and springs, making sure you get in every nook and cranny. Don't worry; as another poster says, this plastic seems to have no purpose and is hidden when the badge is replaced.

Unscrew the three T30 torx bolts holding the bonnet latch mechanism in place noting each bolt's position. Unfortunately the car battery is now flat and we cant get the bonnet opened to jump start it or replace it. The parts department in the local VW garage weren't answering their phones so will have to try them again tomorrow. I think part of the problem is it was already detached from the catch the first time I took a screwdriver to it so I never saw it properly assembled at the start of the job. Once you have your badge out (I had to break one of the clips to get mine out 😪) you can grab the rubber cable guide.

I can get the handle off and can take the panel off to get at the cable but the dial/wheel seems to be attached to a box - do I need to replace this entire box? First thing to say (and this is from retrospect, once I eventually got the catch off), it looks like, on my vehicle (Mk5 GT Tdi - 2004 model), there is an "emergency release" tag, sticking through the top slat of the grille, just on the driver's side of the VW badge. I have pulled the lever in the cabin of the vehicle and pulled the tab but the bonnet is not releasing. Incidentally there is not an "emergency release tab" what I found as a plastic tab in that location is part of the lock mechanism and I think is meant to stop any chance of the alarm and operating cable drooping down into view. I tackled it for the third time this morning - but the first time in proper daylight - finally managed to get both metal tabs on the catch in both slots on the cable guide.
