In Dog Soldiers, however, the lack of ammunition is quickly solved, and the film morphs instead into a rural siege story similar to Straw Dogs—although in this case, the real twist is that the home that the soldiers are defending isn’t their own, so it’s actually an inversion of the dynamic from Peckinpah’s film. If it wasn’t already clear from that description, she identifies one of her main sources for that line of reasoning: Carol Clover’s seminal 1992 classic Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film. Video Disclaimer: Screen captures used in the review are taken from the standard Blu-ray disc, not the 4K UHD Blu-ray disc. Marshall also put together a great effects crew, and thanks to his insistence on using practical makeup rather than CGI, the film hasn’t dated as badly as some other werewolf films of the era. I knew of Sean Pertwee and Kevin McKidd and liked their portrayals, and thought the remainder of the actors, particularly Darren Morfitt as "Spoon", were top notch as well.

Details that were once lost in the shadows are now visible again—in other words, it’s better contrast, not greater contrast. Despite the grain, the picture is sharp and clear to the point you can even see the weave in the character’s jackets and every individual hair of stubble on their faces. No shirtless underwear models lusting after teenage girls here, just a bunch of normal guys desperately trying to survive the night.

It's super rough around the edges and you can tell that Marshall and DoP Sam McCurdy are doing everything in their power to hide any of the imperfections, but the flaws are part and parcel of the DNA of what makes great horror films great. On the other hand, the making-off features are wonderful (as you would expect from a Marshall film if we are being honest). Dog Soldires is one of my favourite werewolf movies, I just love how it doesn't take all that much to create a successfully suspensful action horror that even has a twist thrown in (as if it wasn't so great already). As to the werewolves and their type – look to the cellar and Megan’s reveal, I think you can tell they are not tortured, they love what they are!

Yes, I've watched " Dog Soldiers" a number of times and own 3 copies of it ( DVD, Scream Blu, and Koch (German) MediaBook Blu). That’s a big reason why the genre has proven so versatile: audiences are already familiar with the basic conceit, and that fact frees filmmakers to spend more time working it into different contexts. We are given a new commentary from Alison Peirse, which is also well worth a listen as some valuable thoughts are brought up here. But their night is about to get worse because the werewolves have followed them and it's only a matter of time before dinner is served. It doesn't actually sound like they're just rhyming off words from a script and it adds some authenticity to the group.

The camera work was excellent, especially the "shaky cam" technique used during the soldiers' initial departure from the helicopter, and during Spoon's valiant last stand in the kitchen (my favorite scene in the film - absolutely BRILLIANT). A History Of Lycanthropy: Author Gavin Baddeley On Werewolf Cinema (HD, 33:21) – Baddeley talks sort of his history with horror films and the kind of mindset and history on British horror before seeing Dog Soldiers for the first time.

Fans of the film should easily lean toward this upgrade for the most definitive version of the movie to date. The special features are, as we’ve come to expect from Second Sight, fairly comprehensive, and there’s more than enough on offer to sate the appetites of even the hungriest Dog Soldiers fan. Marshall served as his own editor, and he wisely chose not to linger on the monsters, cutting around them quickly instead. tweaked the actual palette that much in the 4K UHD version, though there seemed to be a somewhat wider range of green tones in particular. Her primary touchstone is still Clover, however, as she spends much of her time evaluating the ways that male bodies are traumatized in the film.I'd say the special effects and the 'practical' effects werewolf costumes were incredibly advanced for their time and still hold up to this day. And from the beginning, it's clear how scary and intelligent the werewolves are, because they apparently took out a Special Forces unit without much trouble. Here we meet Sergeant Wells ( Sean Pertwee), Cooper ( Kevin McKidd), and others, who are on their way to meet up with a Special Ops unit, led by C.
