Description

It's not an easy read, and much of the subject matter leaves the reader with an uneasy, sullied feeling, as if the very dirt clogging the Victorian gutters has crept under the skin. However, it's very well done, and Lily herself is a wonderfully drawn character; spirited, flawed, and all too human. As with other novels by Rose Tremain, her writing pulled me right into the story, and left me thinking about long after I'd finished reading. Lily tried once again to turn around, to pull free of the nurse, to run to wherever Nellie had gone … ‘Stop that!’ said the nurse. ‘She’s gone and you will not find her. There are no sentimental goodbyes here. We forbid them. Your foster-mother did her duty and that is all. Now, she takes in another baby and you will be forgotten’. A heartbreaking story set in Victorian England from the pitch-perfect pen of Rose Tremain Antonia Senior, The Times, *Books of the Year*

I love a historical setting, and this author aced it. Every detail was written with such precision: the clothing, setting, dialogue, moral code and behaviour felt effortless, and meant you could truly be immersed in this world. Lily is a novel in an historical setting, but Rose Tremain resists the label ‘historical novel’. ‘When you write about history, you can write anybody’s story,’ she says. ‘There isn’t this question of authenticity.’ The old London in which Lily lives and works is, however, realistically portrayed and the Thomas Coram Foundling Hospital did exist. Its founder and governors were kindly, god-fearing men; and wealthy women, like Lily’s benefactress, Lady Elizabeth Mortimer, helped to support such benevolent institutions. Not everyone who works in such places, however, is as good-hearted as their founders, and harsh punishment and cruelty, then as now, were not uncommon.

Ő fogja elhozni Lily számára a halálos ítéletet?

She dreams of Sam Trent, who seems to be watching over her, and he also seems to have special feelings for her. It is her guilty secret, because Sam is a married man and his wife has been especially kind to her.

Lily endures extreme emotional and physical suffering, much of it meted out by a particularly sadistic repressed lesbian. Later as an adult she builds a life of sorts as a seamstress but she has also committed an as yet undiscovered crime and cannot escape the conviction she is soon to hang. Lenyűgöző… Tremain zsigeri elevenséggel kelti életre a viktoriánus Londont ebben a mélyen emberi regényben, miközben bűn és jóvátétel, elutasítás, szegénység és bűntudat témáit bontja ki.” – Observer Lily’s life could change in an instant. She has new opportunities offered to her by Belle; Lady Mortimer has expressed the intention of taking her to live with her as her companion; and there is the potential of a love affair with Sam. More pressing, however, is her urge to confess. To whom? To Sam?A little bit of Adrian Mole in a 1950s upper middle class Berkshire girl, or maybe just encapsulating the ubiquitous teenage inkling that everyone else has everything already figured out. After her institutional years, rebellious Lily is employed at Belle Prettywood's Wig Emporium and enjoys learning her craft and working within a friendly female community. Yet, memories of her time in the foundation and a need to understand her origins underpin her daily life. Will she be able to quiet the voices and the pictures in her head?
