About this deal

Some of the strengths of this work are that it is organized in such a way that it is easy to find a work on a particular theory or by a specific author. I loved the diversity in their choice of authors (still way to go but it is an important step towards more inclusivity). However, as a particularly mobile student, I've lugged mine all over the place and as yet it has not been rendered damaged.

I say that despite the fact that it's seriously skimpy on texts written before 1900 (all of which are crammed into the first third of the book) and in Latin America (none, unless you count Gloria Anzaldúa, an American). As an introduction to theory for students, however, it is a bit overwhelming and doesn't offer much in the way of engagement with texts that other lit crit anthologies, such as Shirley Staton's "Literary Theory in Praxis" do. Overall this book is excellent, and I would thoroughly recommend it to any student considering further education. I believe I left it blank because I never read the entire thing(thank you, compassionate professors).

Her first foray into mystery, Miss Baker Regrets, was published as Book II in Bricktop's Paris: African American Women in Paris Between the Two World Wars in February 2015. This isn't bedtime reading, unless you have insomnia, but with a bit of caffeine it makes for an incredibly engaging and pleasurable time. It can't ever hope to replace original texts of course, but either as an introduction or a handy collection for easy reference, it does hold a vast selection of real gems. A leading critic of postmodernism and social theories relating to literature, he is the author of Postmodernism and its Critics (Cornell UP), Hannah Arendt: A Critical Introduction (U of Minnesota P), Democracy’s Children: Intellectuals and the Rise of Cultural Politics (Cornell UP), and American Liberalism: An Interpretation for Our Time (UNC Press), and editor (with Craig Calhoun) of Hannah Arendt and the Meaning of Politics (U of Minnesota P).However, a good selection from each is included, as is a quick preface for each individual containing a holistic overview of their biographical information and theoretical contributions to their respective fields. I look forward to reading more from it, if I ever have time, and I'm sure it will be a valuable reference tool for the future. I got this for only 20 bucks and over the course of a year and a half I got much more than my money's worth out of it. A foremost historian of contemporary literary criticism and theory, he is the author of the standard history, American Literary Criticism from the 1930s to the 1980s as well as Deconstructive Criticism and Cultural Criticism, Literary Theory, Poststructuralism (all three books published by Columbia UP), Postmodernism: Local Effects, Global Flows (SUNY Press), Theory Matters (Routledge), Living with Theory (Blackwell), and American Literary Criticism since the 1930s, 2nd edition (Routledge).

Those problems aside, I like the book's introductions and appreciated that for a tome of nearly 3,000 pages it carries surprisingly well in a backpack. I purchased this for my undergraduate degree in English and we have been directed to it a lot from our course leaders and it is useful for accesible background reading and secondary reading for essays and such as it contains a very wide range of critical analyses/essays etc. As with all Norton anthologies, this one s well annotated and introduced; additionally, each theorist and critic has his or her own introduction, along with a helpful primary and secondary bibliography.
