To get there she must first escape from her wicked aunt and uncle and she’ll need the help of her best friend Gilbert, a very clever cat. Working for a diverse collection of clients worldwide, his unmistakable style has lent itself to some fantastic campaigns that have been highly commended throughout the industry. The closest I found to ‘wisdom and ecstasy’ was when I was visited by some intestinal parasites and a strange desert flu.

Throughout the story, as a reader, you are asking where her parents are, why are the aunt and uncle so cruel and why is she always locked away? That’s all very well, but what happens to the imagination when the spirit stops flickering like the needle of a broken compass? Vous avez pléthore des romans de ce genre qui sont plus intéressants ( voir les titres évoqués plus haut), et, il faut dire qu'ils sont pour la plupart devenus des classiques. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. The story takes place against a Victorian backdrop and the grime and darkness of the period is wonderfully captured. There is a charming classic feel to the imagery reminiscent of Edward Ardizzone’s in Stig of The Dump or Garth Williams’ and Charlotte’s Web. Chris Worley also does a great job filling each page with illustrations to promote reader engagement. A welcome shift perhaps lies in our hero, Clementine, who celebrates the strong women of traditional tales who had always been there until the Grimms and Perrault shifted the narrative perspective away from them. He has won a number of literary awards including the Bologna Ragazza Prize, a Nestle Smarties Award and a Booktrust Early Years Award. If your looking for a quick middlegrade about a girl finding her own power, a family reunion and a cute cat keep on reading.

In any case, the mad plan was dislodged by the news that my first novel was short-listed for a prize. Ross Hoffman wrote that "her sound has a comfortingly homespun, unfussy quality, and a patient, uplifting serenity, that remain uniquely her own". Seul point de consolation pour la malheureuse petite fille: un chat, Andy, qui lui tiens compagnie et tourne en ridicule le couple odieux. The news hit us instantly: this was not the tropics (it was snowing), the people looked like sunburned Scots, and we were at the end of the world.Mistreated and abused by her wicked aunt and uncle, Clementine dreams of a magic place from her cellar bedroom, hoping she will, one day, escape the Great Black City. Clementine is imprisoned by her evil Aunt and Uncle who are your typical villains (very Roald Dahl-esque characters, reminiscent of the Twits).

Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. I would highly recommend this to challenge year 2 readers but would make an excellent story for drama and writing activities with lower KS 2 learners.Much of the book's unique feel comes from how the narrator directly interacts with the reader, providing asides, and pulling back the curtain to reveal how the villains perform their vile deeds. When Auntie Vermilla is caught by the police and crowd, uncle Rufus is oddly described as dancing in his clutches. Anything with a magical cat character is going to be a hit in my book, and this story is a really fun and entertaining read – it’s almost what you’d get if you crossed The Twits with A Little Princess, but of course with an added (and wonderful!
