Description

This volume contains the entire biblical text with introductions by Revd Henry Wansbrough OSB to every book. The 1973 French translation, the Bible de Jérusalem, is followed only where the text admits to more than one interpretation. The introductions and footnotes, translated almost entirely from the French, have also been thoroughly revised and expanded, making it one of the most scholarly editions of the Bible. Any unauthorized use, without prior written consent of Catholic Online is strictly forbidden and prohibited. I spent some time comparing it with another Bible and found that this Jerusalem Bible seems to have been photocopied, scanned – something that I did not expect with a nice modern cover, so it is true when people say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”.

Substantially revising the JB and NJB texts, the new translation "applies formal equivalence translation for a more accurate rendering of the original scriptures, sensitivity to readable speech patterns and more inclusive language".And it was wonderful not having to deal with archaic texts like the King James and Douay-Rheims when one simply wanted to do personal spiritual reading. The Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls as presented in Bible and computer: the Stellenbosch AIBI-6 Conference: proceedings of the Association internationale Bible et informatique, "From alpha to byte", University of Stellenbosch, 17–21 July, 2000 Association internationale Bible et informatique. The name " Yahweh" has been replaced with "the LORD" throughout the Old Testament, and the Psalms have been completely replaced with the 1963 Grail Psalter. The notes for short like the ones in the New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition, similar in length to that of the Canadian Bible Society. The French reference for The New Jerusalem Bible, and the source of its study notes, is the French La Bible de Jérusalem, last updated in 1998, a new Bible project is currently operating under the title The Bible in its Traditions.

That’s not a bad thing, as it could be very accurate in translating the thoughts of the original language. If you look at bible translation continum charts and the Wikipedia page for the Jerusalem Bible it is not a formal equivalence, it’s a dynamic translation. As a result, a number of Dominicans and other scholars at the École Biblique in Jerusalem translated the scriptures into French. This decision was based on translating or reinstating the earliest known copy of parts of the Old Testament found at Qumran in 1947 (the Dead Sea Scrolls), dating to about the second century BCE.

Since the launch of the Jerusalem Bible more than fifty years ago, one of the most important elements of the JB and the NJB has been their comprehensive study footnotes and book introductions. New Testament: La Bible de Jérusalem, Eclectic text with high correspondence to the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece with major variant readings from the Majority text and sacred tradition (i. The French portion of the Demonstration Volume is available online, together with a single sample of the English translation. According to the notes, more weight will be given to the Septuagint in the translation of the Hebrew Bible scriptures, though the Masoretic Text will remain the primary source. The New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) is an English-language translation of the Bible published in 1985 by Darton, Longman and Todd and Les Editions du Cerf, edited by Benedictine biblical scholar Henry Wansbrough, and approved for use in study and personal devotion by members of the Catholic Church and approved also by the Church of England.

When the French version was updated in 1973, the changes were used to revise the Jerusalem Bible, creating the New Jerusalem Bible. The biblical scriptures were written to be proclaimed, so the RNJB uses linguistic style and speech patterns best suited for being read out loud. Paperback version of The New Jerusalem Bible is recognised as one of today’s most accurate, clear and modern translations, the fruit of long collaboration between leading biblical scholars. This is certainly not a Bible for beginners (those who want to read the Bible with intention and learning). As a Catholic Bible, it includes 73 books: the 39 books shared with the Hebrew Bible, along with the seven deuterocanonical books, as the Old Testament, and the 27 books shared by all Christians as the New Testament. The notes, cross-references and book introductions of the JB and NJB are replaced in the RNJB by new materials which reflect the fruit of the most up-to-date and ecumenical scholarship. On his contribution to the Jerusalem Bible, Tolkien wrote, "Naming me among the 'principal collaborators' was an undeserved courtesy on the part of the editor of the Jerusalem Bible. For example, in Deuteronomy 32:8–9, not only is "Lord" translated as Yahweh, but a phrase "sons of Israel" is corrected to "sons/children of God" on basis of the Qumran and the Septuagint texts. This Bible is suited more for Scripture scholars and those who really want to learn more about different Catholic Bible translation.

The New Jerusalem Bible is an update to the Jerusalem Bible, an English version of the French Bible de Jérusalem. When it comes to Bible translations, readability and reliability are what count; and on both counts, the original JERUSALEM BIBLE stands alone.I lead Scripture study and recommend it to everyone - not as their primary Bible, but as an addition. The revised text is accompanied by new introductions, and textual and liturgical notes, supplemented as needed with material from the notes to the New Jerusalem Bible. The Jerusalem Bible translation is a VERY dynamic translation, it’s a “thought-for-thought” translation vs “word-for-word” translation.
