Description

Matty tried to tell his story in this book through recipes that define who he is and he absolutely pulled it off.

One we tried from this one was a twist on nachos but made with fingerling potatoes instead of chips. Home Style Cookery is the New York Times bestselling recipe-packed cookbook from Matty Matheson—star of Viceland’s It’s Suppertime and Dead Set On Life , and cast member of Hulu’s hit series The Bear —offering advice for the home cook who wants to be more creative and ambitious when cooking for family and friends. I have several recipes tagged to try but the first one I tried was the Double Bone Pork Chop with Maple Jack Daniel's Bacon Sauce.

Grilled Beef Tongue (“the trick in this version is to peel the tongue while it’s hot and place it back into the strained braising liquid to chill overnight”), Fried Clams, Lobster Pie, Mussel Stew, and Gumbo, and that’s just the beginning. Cooking lobster is not that difficult, and you should always, always, always be careful to never, ever overcook it. The Family recipes are a little more straightforward than those in the Cooking School and Restaurants chapter, but many are quite time consuming to prepare. I didn’t know you could make Bolognese taste better than it already did but hey ho, a bit of milk and some eggs and oh boy you’re into a winner!

I have loved his videos on munchies over the past few years, and the recent addition of it's suppertime have been fantastic.

If you had the opportunity to read our review about Matty's first cookbook you'll know that we are big fans of his work. In Home Style Cookery, Matty opens up his his home and shares his approachable and tasty style of cooking. For example, in his introduction to the recipe for Sausage and Potatoes he says, ‘If you don’t want to make sausage, you don’t have to. Great storytelling and even better recipes from Toronto- based Matteson, a YouTube sensation and the star of Viceland’s It’s Suppertime and Dead Set On Life. His senses of family history, place, adventure and humor have me so charmed, I’m reading every word of this book.

The Blue Goose in DeSable, down the road from Crapaud, a small village of three hundred people on the side of the Trans-Canada Highway, originally opened in 1947.

Having said that, I live in Middle Tennessee now and most of the recipes did nothing but piss me off.

That said, the recipes themselves are not hard to follow and Matheson’s anecdotes and advice could make the difference between a dish one might never think of attempting and one that sets a new bar. I originally picked up this cookbook because I saw a video on social media of one of Matty's recipes and it looked delicious. It’s more than just an influence; it’s the true illustration of people who left a profound mark on Matheson that shaped his life no matter how differently they may have lead their lives. Matty Matheson is one of the most exciting and original voices to have emerged on the cookery scene in the last five years or so.Recommendation: Matty Matheson is a well-known Canadian chef who tells it like it is, which makes Home Style Cookery fun to read and easy to cook from.
