Passepartout still manages to catch the steamer to Yokohama but cannot inform Fogg that the steamer is leaving the evening before its scheduled departure date.

While various proposals for a Channel Tunnel had been made as early as 1802, no one had attempted to build one; an 1881–82 attempt was abandoned after the first mile. While the Henrietta was headed for Bordeaux, Fogg manages to bribe the crew to change its course for Liverpool against the captain's wishes. The book follows Phileas's son as he travels around the world by car instead of train, hence the longer time limit. But there's a twist as the show teaches us all about Nellie Bly, the real-life journalist who set out to break Phineas' record - and won!

Another alternative, then, would be travelling down to Djibouti and crossing over to Yemen, one of the world's most dangerous countries. During the journey, Fogg befriends Alberto, the son of industrialist Niccolò Moretti, with whom he shares an interest for mechanical and technological inventions.

Needless to say, the 'theatre' at which Passepartout becomes part of a human pyramid, is back in Hollywood. Heian Shrine is surprisingly quite modern, constructed in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto (which was Japan's first capital).Chapter XXXV appeared on 20 December; [8] 21 December, the date upon which Fogg was due to appear back in London, did not include an installment of the story; [9] on 22 December, the final two chapters announced Fogg's success.

On some crossings, freighter travel might be an option if there is no passenger ship, but the number of spaces on these vessels is limited; a private ocean-going vessel (such as a yacht) may also be an option.

One alternative would be flying to Singapore and travelling from there by land to Hong Kong through Southeast Asia. Follow in the footsteps of Phileas Fogg for this special dining experience, amidst the Victorian townhouses that make the Taj in London. Otherwise it's going to be hard, time-consuming, expensive, bureaucratic and dangerous if you want to duplicate this leg as closely as possible.
