Description

Reading this book was like reading someone’s unfinished thoughts which float around from one subject to another, not finishing the previous point/ statement, with no conclusion. This was a book that took me to many amazing places around the world and helped to (briefly) satisfy my constant desire to travel.

The trains in America are all largely alike aside from the people on them, so that is what Rajesh concentrates on for a chapter, and entertainingly so. I loved Monisha Rajesh's Around India in 80 trains, and have been looking forward to reading this one. It just lacked a warmth of personality to it, I know it's a non-fiction book but I was still hoping for a story, not just an advanced version of that school assignment "What I did on my holidays. With just twelve minutes until departure, the Sakura Shinkansen slid up with the stealth of a creep at a bar, and a woman stepped out carrying a bin bag. While she doesn't go into much detail about this aspect, I would read the book just for her insights and anecdotes about this time.

No doubt there were a number who did subscribe to extremism, and it was a tragedy that the entire community was suffering as a result. Packing up her rucksack - and her fiancé, Jem - Monisha embarks on an unforgettable adventure that will take her from London's St Pancras station to the vast expanses of Russia and Mongolia, North Korea, Canada, Kazakhstan and beyond. I've been watching a YouTube traveler who goes to misrepresented countries (Indigo Traveller), and his travels aligned with some of Rajesh's experiences and really enhanced my reading of the book, especially in North Korea! When Monisha Rajesh announced plans to circumnavigate the globe in eighty train journeys, she was met with wide-eyed disbelief.

They begin with a brisk tour of Europe, ending up in Moscow, where they take some nightmarish taxi journeys to find Patriot Park, a “military Disneyland” recently opened by President Putin. Definitely focus’ on the train travel aspect rather than the places she visited and descriptions of them - which is what I wanted. But our experience on Amtrak was very enjoyable - because we booked the level of service that we desired for a relaxing vacation. In some of the countries, she goes into a lot of detail, highlighting the political situation in Tibet or expanding on newsworthy stories to add depth to the narrative.

WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELLER AWARD FOR BEST TRAVEL BOOKSHORTLISTED FOR THE STANFORD DOLMAN TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD'Monisha Rajesh has chosen one of the best ways of seeing the world.

Also the title of the book is very misleading - this is mainly a trip round Asia, North America and a little bit of Europe. I didn’t find out whether she managed to eat xiao long bao in Din Tai Fung (she mentioned the place, but never said if she went there) or if she ever tried fermented tofu – it was also mentioned in the book, but then the author quickly changed the subject, leaving me quite frustrated. To make it a little less impersonally ghoulish, before the whole undertaking, Rajesh interviewed a British former prisoner of war who had been transported from prison in Singapore to help build the notorious railway.

It feels like a title that has been added as a marketing tool, although they so go on 80 trains - not that we hear about many of them. I would love to go to different places so these kind of travel books are the only way for me to experience it. She stood next to the door holding it open as passengers exited the train, and bowed as each one deposited their litter. On this trip, accompanied by her terrific partner, she brings her warmth and intelligence to each situation they encounter.
