Fine clothbound hardcover with light indications of shelving/handling in a Near Fine dust jacket with a hint of rubbing to the extremities and a touch of shelf wear. I remember being in love with Babar as a child, but I'm thinking they must have been the updated stories. After his untimely death in at the early age of 37 his son Laurent continued writing and illustrating the tales of Babar which now includes numerous books, films and an animated television series. One of the most iconic series of animal books in history, Babar has become a household name both as a character in children’s books and on TV.

The 61 sketches, some with colour, most in pencil alone, are numbered on the reverse so that the annotations in the commentary are easy to follow and all are held together neatly with a red paper band.

Between 1931 and 1937 he completed a body of work that forever changed the face of the illustrated book. The headings and captions have been printed in orange and blue to match the binding of the facsimile. The Europeanized elephants are, as in the colonial mechanism of indirect rule, then made trustees of the system, consuls for the colonial power. While the good hero or heroine has to be particularized, with flaws and idiosyncrasies, the evil force is, oddly, the more powerful the less distinct it is; because villainy is itself so interesting, there’s no great need to particularize the villain. The son of a publisher, Jean de Brunhoff was born into a world of books, but before following in his father’s footsteps he briefly fought on the front at the end of World War One.

They get sent back home and Babar decides to tag along, since he comes to realize that that's where belongs. He made oil paintings for adult collectors, and those which survive are likewise quite conservative and finished. After the armistice, he decided to become a professional artist and studied painting at the Academie de la Grand Chamiere in Montparnasse. It appears that the book has been repaired and strengthened with a new spine, but original laid down and retaining original endpapers and covers. Laurent de Brunhoff’s Babar books include Babar et ce coquin d’Arthur (1946; Babar and That Rascal Arthur) and Babar’s Celesteville Games (2011).The Babar series of books are recommended reading on former First Lady Laura Bush's national reading initiative list. So begins one of the stories that most please the imagination of the modern child and his distant relation the modern adult—Jean de Brunhoff’s “The Story of Babar,” published in 1931. First published in the 1930s, this charming French classic tells the story of what happens to baby elephant Babar as he grows up. I'm not planning to add children's books to my page, but this one really took my breath away as I read it to my one year old one night. It is there that Babar’s mother, with her little elephant on her back, is murdered, with casual brutality, by a squat white hunter. I bought this for my 2 year old nephew and would suggest that this is probably the minimum age for this story. Babar, following his mother's murder at the hands of white hunters, blithely follows their path back to the white city. Despite the presence of these counsellors, Babar's rule seems to be totally independent of any elected body, and completely autocratic. It's been a while since I've read such a bizarre book, and it's been even longer than that that I've read a bizarre children's book.

Book is covered in laminated pictorial scene of Babar and his Little Girl on a pink background; light shelfwear. There, he falls into the trusteeship of a sweet grandmotherly lady who helps him get settled into the city.
