Description

I stumbled upon the game description for Culdcept Revolt by accident as I was browsing through "upcoming" 3DS releases. I remember tuning in for the Culdcept Nintendo Direct what feels like an age ago, when we were sure it would never touch these shores. A recommended move option is also available for newcomers and I found it surprisingly competent at determining my best move.

When forming your deck of fifty cards, which are here named 'books', you need to keep in mind the more attack-oriented fire and earth elements, while balancing trickier water and air elements that boast special abilities. If I land on an opponent’s spot, I either have to pay the toll or fight their creature with one of my own.

There's far less customisation here as the game sets its own rules in these arena-style lobbies, but it means that beginners can jump in without much fear of being swarmed by expert players. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.Magic essentially acts as your currency in game, and is spent on summoning monsters as well as paying any tolls for landing on owned spaces.

Gates also heal your battle-weary monsters and activate them again after they become fatigued through use. Despite how genuinely helpful this can be, it does rely on the tired cliché of amnesia as an extra crutch. It's frustrating to see games turn around so quickly on a total whim, but it does admittedly add to the excitement sometimes. Allen is a Cepter himself, and gradually gains power as he fights against enemy Cepters hired by the Count.Beware though, people who are short on attention spans and intellectual fortitude may not have the time to fully see everything this game has to offer. I’m on what I believe is the final set of boards in the campaign and I neither care nor remember if my hero got his memories back.

On a final note, I'd like to say that the Limited Edition version of this game was so profoundly packaged with amazing artwork and very cool extras that I simply couldn't believe the amount of love and detail that went into the preparation. Up to four players roll dice each turn to determine how many spaces they move around a variety of different maps, claiming squares as their own by placing guardian monsters on them, which then demand a toll off any other player who subsequently lands on the space. With some exceptions there's no restrictions on where monsters can be played, but there is a bonus given if the monster's element matches the square's.
