Fuji has also extended the working temperature range of this film to include 40 - 104°F so you need not worry about using it year round.

The Fujifilm Instax Mini Monochrome Film lets you capture visually appealing traditional portraits when used in conjunction with the Fujifilm Instax Mini camera. His brown coat goes through regular slightly cool toned Grey’s all the way to black, but the green leaves in the background are definitely still a little green. I plan on pushing through with some more day time shots and different subjects to get a nice sample set to look at.

I chose a number of images that I knew would be challenging to print and would cover the full spectrum of what you might shoot. Using the Instax Share SP-2 printer gets around problems such as poor camera metering, bad focus, poor optics and lighting colour temperature. Compatible with Fujfilm Instax mini cameras and printers, Lomo' Instant and Instant Automat, Leica Sofort, Mint TL70 Instantflex and Holga Instant cameras.

I’m grateful to Fujifilm and delighted that this is the first new film they’ve introduced after cutting many lines of beloved films in recent years. I strongly believe that it’s a waste to load up a camera with this film and simply use it at parties. Perhaps the range is a little better than Color, but improved highlight detail is partly because Monochrome is slightly slower than Color and neither the printer nor any of the cameras adjust for this. Fujifilm claim 12 line pairs per mm of film resolution for Instax Mini and my 600dpi scans proved capable of wringing as much detail out as possible (300dpi would have been sufficient, maybe even less). If you are presenting online (or enlarged), and intend a monochrome output then yes, I would recommend using Instax Mini Monochrome due to what I saw as better dynamic range and detail rendition.

The blocks of graduated fine lines on the test images below are pitched at 1 pixel wide at 800 x 600 (the printer’s maximum resolution). Recognized for its excellent color reproduction, the film has a glossy finish and is an excellent choice for general use, portraiture or even with electronic flash. The new black and white film is an ISO 800 normal contrast film that can be tough to work with at times, but when you get it right, it really shines. This versatile ISO 800 film features neutral grey tonality combined with natural contrast and highlight response that helps it to capture vivid monochrome images under daylight or studio lighting. The Instax SP-2’s Instax Share app has a desaturation filter that gives results different to silver based black and white film, with blues, magentas and reds darkened and yellows paler.

We use Royal Mail for the majority of our consignments aside from large and oversized items which many come via an alternative carrier. You can be confident that all your color Fuji Instax shots will last for many years without any strange chemical deterioration or major discoloration. But where this film becomes really tough overall is in understanding how it works and that some cameras that are used with it don’t exactly make its use that simple overall.

An Instax Mini Monochrome print of a colour image actually comes out more like a silver print (e xamples provided later in this article). One thing to note is that contrast is very high with this film, far higher than Fuji Instax color films. To be honest, because of all these variables and factors, I really recommend shooting in a highly controlled environment from the photographer or absolutely crappy weather. The Impossible Project has been leading the charge in creating innovative new instant films and formats, and I’ve been waiting to see if Fuji would start experimenting with their own suddenly wildly successful instant film format to match.

For my tests I’ve been using an Instax Mini 8 but chose to meter with a good Sekonic exposure meter. When printing, dynamic range is not significantly different between Instax Mini Monochrome and Color. Another user benefit is that it has been improved to lessen the developing time before you see your print - a real benefit when you're photographing young children who are notorious for wanting everything "yesterday". One thing i noticed when scanning or snapping a pic of the mono-photo, is the different color casts can come out harsher (i guess is a good word) than the original print. My LC-Wide with a poor quality add on dioptre lens and instant back takes sharper, better exposed Instax photos than any of Fujifilm’s own models and that doesn’t come close to a mobile phone printing via the SP-2, which offers better focus, sharper optics, more accurate focus and increased dynamic range.
