But by the time Jackson turns back to face Chong Li, the burly Chinese fighter has risen back to his feet and is ready to show the whole crowd what happens to people who try to make a mockery of him. They give him a photo of Dux, explain that they are trying to stop him from competing in the Kumite, and they ask Chen to contact them if his men learn anything about Dux's whereabouts. Not that I was expecting 'Avatar'-like levels of controlled video precision, but what I did want was a noticeable upgrade from the grainy VHS and DVD releases that preceded it. But Janice quickly finds another way of entry, going "undercover" posing as a date to a wealthy patron.

Despite Janice's indignant protests, Dux arranges an alternative contest-- he puts a coin in Hossein's hand and challenges him to close his hand into a fist around the coin before Dux can successfully snatch the coin out of his palm. In his youth, American Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) was taught the art of ninjutsu by Japanese martial arts master Senzo Tanaka. I guess it must have to do with the ever-shifting science of distribution and rights-holding, because 'Bloodsport' was released by the now-defunct B-movie studio Cannon Films (greatest logo ever) and 'Timecop' was put out by Universal Pictures. A Note on the Mullet: Van Damme sports a mullet (or possibly a combination mullet/perm) in this film to which I could not possibly do justice in prose.

The lossless encoding actually makes instances of awkward balance between dialog, music and effects and obvious post-sync dialog even more noticeable than they might otherwise be. Flashbacks are shown of his training with Tanaka, including training where he is blindfolded and learns to operate through his other senses as if he were fully sighted.

Probably the most expensive ‘standard’ edition I’ve bought, but definitely my favourite Jean-Claude Van Damme film. We're shown that you have to get into a rig, which looks kind of like a carnival ride crossed with the vehicles from 'Star Tours,' which shoots you into a void, at which point you pop up at some designated spot in time. Neither of these presentations will lend themselves to use as home theater demo material, but both seem to be fairly accurate replications of how the films appeared in theaters. The officials all stand and turn their backs to Chong Li, facing the wall and bowing their heads in a moment of silence. His intent is to honor his Sensei Tanaka (Chiao), who trained him since he was a young boy and is now very ill. Each movie suffers from wonky skin tones (in both movies the humans seem to take on a George Hamilton-esque orange tint), to weak black levels, and excessive amounts of grain. He takes control of the match, hammering Chong Li's stomach and then going up to the head with leaping, spinning wheel kicks that knock the burly Chong Li completely for a loop. Timecop' is just as lousy a movie as 'Bloodsport,' although infinitely more watchable, thanks to the visual oomph the mostly overlooked director Peter Hyams brings to the project, some neat-o (but still dated) set pieces, and the fact that you get to see Mia Sara, Sloane from ' Ferris Bueller's Day Off,' naked (fake boobs though – boo).

Rising to his feet, Dux begins to step carefully around the arena, but always able to fend off Chong Li's attacks and land more blows to his stomach. As 90s sci-fi action films go, Timecop is pretty watchable due to its amusing time travel premise (complete with the boatload of irresolvable paradoxes that are part and parcel to the subgenre), and a strong supporting cast. Except that, of course, his wife is killed by people associated with the time travel technology and it sets him on a quest for vengeance. Frank decides to go despite being told by his superiors in the army that he can't because they need him. This plot thread, at some point, reconciles itself with the "bad guys rampaging through time" element, which includes the work of a slimy senator played by the dearly departed Ron Silver.Dux advises Jackson to focus on punches to the stomach, and warns Jackson to stay away from Chong Li's right leg. Chong Li warns Dux that he is next, and Dux just glares back before joining the rest of the crowd in the moment of silence. In Bloodsport, Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Frank Dux, a US Army Captain who plans on using his furlough to fight in an underground full-contact martial arts tournament in Hong Kong known as The Kumite. I can say that I was pleased when his publicist or barber forced shears upon him and redireced his status as a power-symbol of the 80's party-mop.
