It’s fascinating to watch the work done in such detail without the fluff that often comes from talking heads interviews.

We focused much of our efforts on the torch-lit scenes, working to recover as much detail in the shadows and making the blacks look deeper. Please note that some of the screencaptures that appear with this article are taken from the 4K Blu-ray and downscaled to 1080p. Fronsac does not believe that the beast exists and looks for a logical explanation for the gruesome killings.

Dialogue remains keenly represented - in the movie's original native French (with a drop of Italian) - keenly promoted front and centre, from whispers to screams, and enjoying a strong enough set of English subtitles (there are still minor differences across subtitle sets - and, indeed, in the translated script - but this is as good as it's ever been). Behind the Scenes - this archival program takes a closer look at the production of Brotherhood of the Wolf. Dacascos would go on to get some further prime headlining action in Drive, before being reunited with Gans for another tremendously stylish action voyage, the absolutely insane genre mash-up that is Brotherhood of the Wolf. Featurette - presented here are several short archival featurettes that focus on different aspects of the production, characterizations, unique special effects, stylistic appearance, and soundtrack of Brothehood of the Wolf.

I had the pleasure of consulting him on his original artistic direction for the original film,” says Bigueur. The supplemental features on the release include numerous archival programs with the director and cast and crew members; several documentaries on the making of the film; deleted scenes; vintage promotional materials; and more.

The film might not have been as perfect as I remembered but this release is still set to be one of the best to come out this year. At the time, digital colour grading was still a relatively new process, as were the techniques for scanning and digitising film and subsequently mastering back a 35mm film negative for projection. French director Christophe Gans unleashed his first full feature, Crying Freeman, back in 1995, based on the popular manga of the same name. It’s so easily reduced to a genre mash-up, and I think it’s knowledgeable of that, or maybe it’s the lack of flexibility I see in our modern action films. As Fronsac and Mani investigate the incidents around the area, they become inclined to believe that this ‘beast’ is far from the large wolf many claim it to be and it may, in fact, have a human owner controlling its actions.
