A strong three stars; I really liked these scenarios and stories and the perspective Calvino brings, they just fall into the same bleak / miserable / misanthropic zone that makes it tough for me to get into Beckett and Nabakov and such. And like a man who, diving into cold water, has forced himself to believe that the pleasure of diving is in that sensation of cold, and then, swimming, has found within himself a new warmth and, with it, the sense of how cold and hostile the water really is, so Amerigo, after all his mental efforts to transform the polls’ squalor into a precious value, had gone back to his first impression—of an alien, cold place—and he felt that this was the correct view. Draft Day” concerns a relieved but guilty young man whose father has bribed him out of the draft, and in “Don’t Let Me Die in This Place,” a bitter grandfather has moved from the States to Bangkok to live with his son, his Thai daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren.

The last, The Argentine Ant, is about a young couple with an infant who move into their first house. The entire town has this problem, and they go through all the different townsfolk's techniques for ridding themselves of the ants, but really those are just coping mechanisms. The main characters vary a lot -- Amerigo is naively Communistic, and rather irresponsible, while the "Smog" guy is rather stagnant (and clearly has OCD as well). urn:lcp:watcherotherstor0000calv_g9y3:epub:40b6ee07-f34a-44bd-9a9c-dee8873ec979 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier watcherotherstor0000calv_g9y3 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t8sc34z5p Invoice 1652 Isbn 0156949520 Lccn 75009829 Ocr_converted abbyy-to-hocr 1. The ending also rang false, mimicking the ending of Smog note for note despite it being a strange way to end the story in terms of tone.Really enjoyed Smog and to a lesser extent Argentine Ant, which both have a good balance of comedic insights and thought provoking ideas. This notion dated from the first postwar election, when people still believed that in bad weather many Christian Democrat voters—people with no great interest in politics, old people, disabled, infirm, or living in country areas with poor roads—wouldn’t stick their noses out of their front doors.

And in "The Argentine Ant," the citizens of a provincial seaside town struggle against a government-controlled infestation. The neighbors show us some of the strategies people adapt to defeat their daily worries, but the truth is you'll never be able to do away with such worries entirely. The Chalke History Festival announces a new name, new look, and tons for history buffs to get their teeth into! Maybe the most moving piece here is "On The Rainy River," about a draftee's ambivalence about going, and how he decided to go: "I would go to war—I would kill and maybe die—because I was embarrassed not to. His best known works include the Our Ancestors trilogy (1952-1959), the Cosmicomics collection of short stories (1965), and the novels Invisible Cities (1972) and If on a winter's night a traveler (1979).Our child was turning around in amazement at everything, and we had to pretend to take part in his marveling; it was a way of bringing us together, of reminding us of the mild flavour that life has at moments, and of reconciling us to the passing days. His frustration reaches the point where he eventually goes looking for the exterminator that the town hired to keep the community ant free. And finally, "The Argentine Ant" has a young couple and baby arriving in a country cottage -- only to get invaded by ants that evening.
