About this deal

In addition, a thorough understanding of the fretboard can provide a deeper understanding of how chords work and why certain notes combine the way they do, which can be incredibly useful for songwriting and composing.

It is a very short book of only 47 pages, and it covers the very basics of what you would need to learn to start playing guitar. With this new edition, they scrapped the DVD from the previous version, and introduced online video and audio clips, as a supplement to the book's teachings. So, I highly recommend you memorize your pieces but don’t be too hard on yourself, just do a little bit of memory work everyday and see how it goes. Teach Yourself Visually Guitar is both a step-by-step guide to playing acoustic or electric guitar and an accessible reference guide. It’s more of a bridge to the next level when you want to take the next step with your guitar playing. I feel like the biggest mistake my students, and most beginners make, is that they pick up the first few guitar books they see on a list on some site and learn from that.

Now the moment you've been waiting for, here are my reviews of the most popular guitar learning books. The Music Theory for Guitarists: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask tackles a subject that every serious musician should endeavor to learn. You can always skip over things you already know or go back and re-learn things that you have forgotten.I recommend a technique warmup (included in the back of the book), some review of previous easier material, some sight reading, and then dedicated work on the few pieces that you are currently working on. The technique that comes with learning classical guitar is very different than other styles of guitar.

The book uses a variety of techniques, such as mnemonic devices and memory tricks, to help readers quickly and easily understand the twenty-four frets and six strings of the guitar. What sets ‘Teach Yourself Guitar: A Quick and Easy Introduction for Beginners’ apart from all the other books is its concise presentation of the minimum amount of information you need to pick up a guitar and begin playing. You can personally go through the book itself, go through with a teacher, or learn the book in a class setting. For theory knowledge I recommend the Berklee Theory Book 1 which is pretty good and has an answer key at the end and audio samples to download for listening and musicianship. As a basic check you might put a metronome on and be able to play through it as that is a common issue. What worked best for me at that early stage were song books that had chord diagrams and that included popular songs that I liked. While the books listed above are the ones we recommend, there are so many other popular books out there. The book also includes helpful diagrams and illustrations to further clarify key points and make the material more accessible. It's a shame they never made newer editions of this book with more graphics and supplemental audio-video tools.
