Types of emollients Lotions AproDerm Gel is a highly moisturising gel, without the greasiness of an ointment, which actively draws and retains moisture within the skin and provides a protective barrier to help reduce dryness and irritation. It is also an effective pre-bathing emollient so can be applied to skin prior to bathing to prevent it from drying out even further, whilst protecting it from the irritant effects that can be caused by washing and bathing products such as soaps, shower gels and shampoos.

Colloidal oat also acts as a gentle exfoliator for skin so it’s excellent for removing dead cells and maintaining the skins natural pH ( pH buffer), which in turn helps it to become less dry and itchy. 2 As with all emollients, before applying AproDerm ® Ointment for the first time, patients should test it on a small area of skin and leave for 48 hours. If there is no reaction or irritation they can then apply all over the affected area. This limits any potential reaction to a small area. NICE recommends that emollients should be prescribed in large quantities, 250–500g weekly 3 (children under 12), more in adults. Leave a thin layer of emollient on the skin to soak in (the skin should glisten) – this can take about 10 minutes. Proven 2 to protect and restore your skin’s barrier as well as calm any redness or itching caused by dry skin, which means that you scratch less, thus giving your skin time to repair itself.

Precautions:

Mix a small amount (around teaspoonful) of leave-on emollient or soap substitute in the palm of your hand with a little warm water and spread it over damp or dry skin. If you have eczema or psoriasis continue using AproDerm ® Emollient Cream even after the skin has improved to reduce the risk of flare-ups. Use AproDerm ® emollients before bathing (pre-bathing) to help alleviate the drying effects of bathing.

How to get emollients

If you're using a steroid cream or another treatment for your skin condition, wait 20 to 30 minutes between using an emollient and using the other treatment. Ask a doctor which one to use first. Apply AproDermOintment regularly, liberallyand frequently(at least 3 times a day) to the affected area usinggentle strokesand following thedirection of hair growth. AproDerm ® Gel can be used before bathing (known as pre-bathing) to protect the skin from the drying effects of bathing, as well as after bathing to skin that is almost dry to trap in moisture. They can be used to replace lost moisture whenever your skin feels dry or tight. They're very safe and you cannot overuse them.
