The guys spot David Underhill, the university's cool and hunky star physicist, in the cafeteria and are surprised when he wants to work with Leonard. Returning from work, Leonard is enthused about working with the good looking physicist. Penny drops by to talk about Christmas presents, inviting an earful from Sheldon who does not appreciate the obligation put upon him by reciprocal gift-giving.Strangely, none of the guys seemed to know that Dave Underhill was married; a fact that would have likely been known at least to some at the university, as Dave was a high-profile new arrival there. Howard and Raj appear in only one scene in this episode. This event is the second time it happens. The first time was in " The Loobenfeld Decay" (S1E10), the third time is in " The Agreement Dissection" (S4E21) and the fourth time is in " The Ornithophobia Diffusion" (S5E9).

Leonard and Howard are in the university clean room, finishing up after their experiment and getting ready to attend Amy's Christmas dinner when a bird flies in. Howard doesn't want to call building facilities as they will get blamed. In Amy's apartment, Amy and Penny are chatting with Raj and his dad, who has nothing good to say about marriage or his ex-wife. Leonard and Howard call for Raj's help in dealing with the avian intruder. Elsewhere, Bernadette is driving Sheldon to the mall so he can find a present for Amy. Resentful at being made to celebrate Christmas, Sheldon wants to buy a Christmas gift for Amy as they agreed not to buy gifts and she won't have a present for him, ruining her Christmas. It's a Wonderful Life is a Christmas classic that has inspired countless parodies. In the 1946 film, businessman George Bailey is shown by an angel what life might have been like if he had never existed. That's also the premise of The Big Bang Theory episode "The Cooper Extraction." While Sheldon is away in Texas for the birth of his niece, the rest of the gang takes advantage of his absence to decorate the apartment for Christmas. Sheldon worries about the approachingChristmasholidays and his indecision about what to buy for Penny, as he needs it to match the value of her gift to him. After deciding on a basket of bath items he discovers a large selection, so not knowing what Penny will get him, he buys the entire range to cover all contingencies. Penny's gift to Sheldon is a napkin both autographed and used byLeonard Nimoy. Sheldon, overwhelmed since he now possesses Nimoy'sDNA and cangrowhis own Leonard Nimoy, gives Penny all the gift baskets and also a rare "Sheldon" hug. Stuart and Raj organize aHalloweencostume party at the comic book store. Amy and Bernadette will go with their partners, but Penny dislikes parties at the store. Amy and Bernadette then persuade her to show interest in Leonard's activities just as he shows interest in hers despite not liking them. Taking their advice, she visits Leonard's lab, is fascinated by his work, is turned on, and has sex with him there - and whenever she visits his lab, or he shows how smart he is, as at the party. Meanwhile, Sheldon and Amy argue over pair costumes, compromising between Amy's preferredRaggedy Ann & Andyand Sheldon'sR2-D2&C-3POto go as Raggedy Ann and Raggedy C-3PO.Known for its quirky characters and focus on science, “The Big Bang Theory” has plenty of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas special episodes, to get in the Christmas spirit! This episode has no guest appearance by Melissa Rauch as Bernadette until the next episode of " The Psychic Vortex" (S3E12). Bernadette hasn't met Leonard's mother throughout this episode and Season 8's " The Maternal Combustion" (S8E23) until her first time of seeing her without speaking to her or standing up to her in Season 9's " The Celebration Experimentation" (S9E17), likely because there wasn't enough time for that. It is obvious Bernadette would be the only one brave enough to stand up to her. But then in Season 9's " The Line Substitution Solution", they properly met and spoke to each other for the first time ever on the show.
