About this deal

This little-known castle, built between the 14th and 15th centuries, stands in Vienne in southwestern France, in the region known as Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Looming atop a high cliff and overlooking a steep valley, it has all the “proper” attributes of a haunted house (although its landscaping is a bit too tidy for the ghosts to hide in). Billie Walker [is] a tough-talking, glamorous feminist who’s as adept with a pistol as she is on the dance floor, haunted by a tragic past, and unafraid to take on the darkest of foes.” —Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Magnolia Palace Erik (aka The Phantom), is a musical genius with a disfigured face, lurking below in the opera’s creepy maze. He falls in love with Christine Daaé, a singer in the opera chorus. Their tangled tale has it all: awe-inspiring songs, heartbreaking mishaps, and a romance that was doomed from the start. Another ghostly presence that has reportedly spooked former residents and visitors is the Abbey is a white-clad woman who stalks the grounds, moaning and making other strange noises. Local lore maintains that it’s the spirit of the Empress Matilda of England, who was allegedly forced by her father, King Henri I, to remain confined at the Abbey for some five years.

If you want to make the most of your visit and get the real story of the celebrities buried there, this is hands down the best tour to take. Your guide, who knows the city’s darkest secrets, will be your beacon through the shadowy streets. As you walk, every corner will whisper tales of intrigue, and every stone will echo with history. Three other stations had been planned, outside the neighbourhood of La Défense and the Orly Airport, but have never been served by any lines. Two are situated under the business district, and another under the southern part of the Orly Airport. These stations consist only of a concrete box, void of any further development. Overall, this was not as exciting as the first in the series, but it does deal with some very real issues of the time (such as homophobia) and I learned more about the underground queer community in Sydney, London, and France at this time.

For readers like me, who fell in love with the fabulous feisty Billie and her eclectic good-hearted posse (read my review of Book 1), it has felt like a long wait for Book 2 The Ghosts of Paris. Of all the myths spawned by the Commune and its brutal suppression, the dark legend of the pétroleuses, the women incendiaries accused of torching Paris in the revolution’s dying throes, is perhaps the most preposterous – and the most lasting too. In a narrative shaped by the victorious Versaillais, the women of the Commune became the flipside of the revolution, a perverted version of the breastfeeding Marianne, whose milk turned to petrol. According to several accounts, they murdered four monks who continued to reside there, dragging them to the cellars to carry out the nefarious deed. Monks’ blood and overturned jugs of wine are said to have intermingled on the cold cellar floors, leaving a gruesome scene. Robert, Jean (1983). Robert, Jean (ed.).
