In a small bowl, melt the butter and golden syrup together in the microwave in 10 second intervals. Set aside to cool. Can Aldi's own-brand versions of the UK's favourite biscuits hold a candle to the much-loved originals? Bristol Live reporter Louisa Streeting set out to investigate... Chocolate coatings form a barrier around the biscuit when dunking and hold it together when it would otherwise break.

McVitie's has undeniably played a vital part in commercialising the sweet treat, propelling them into the mainstream and helping them to become a British household staple. They’ve dominated the biscuit market pretty much since their conception, even citing profits five times more than the next two top competitors in the UK in 2020 - so how do they square up against own brand supermarket versions? So I am going to carry on baking and sharing recipes with you. If there’s anything you’d like me to make, anything you have that you want to use up or something that you have no idea how to use – well drop me a comment and I will try to help you. Of course, marketing does not just stop at taglines. There have been many references to the biscuits, which you can certainly find online. One of the things that enabled so many funny references is the etymology behind the name “Hobnobs”. Divide the biscuit dough into 16 portions and roll into balls. Spread out evenly on a couple of large baking trays, then flatten slightly and bake until golden. NOTE: when I say biscuit in this post, I’m referring to the British word for cookie. I think of a biscuit as a certain type of cookie: one which is thin and always dry and crunchy, never soft or chewy. What I do not mean by biscuit is a scone-type-thing. Okay. Cool. Let’s proceed.

The hobnobs turned out amazingly well, probably even better than the shop-bought version because these used butter (not palm oil) so had even more flavour! They’re oaty, crisp and dunkable! As chocolate hobnobs usually have a kind of cross-hatched drip pattern on them (not sure how else to describe it ) which I couldn’t recreate, I just drizzled them with extra chocolate for a decorative effect. That step is completely optional, as is actually coating them with chocolate – plain HobNobs are a thing – but, to be honest, why would you go for plain if there’s a chocolate option?

See how chocolate digestives are made at a London biscuit factory". Time Out . Retrieved 17 August 2022. British biscuit consumption is the highest in the world, higher than all major European countries and even 35 per cent higher than the US.

For many of us, the biscuit break signposts a much needed pause in the day. While others, mostly parents I imagine, are tormented by the uttering of "can I have a biscuit?" on a daily basis. Why am I so fanatical about these biscuits?? Because they’re probably My Favourite Tea-Dipping Biscuit. A sturdy, oat base flavoured simply with golden syrup and held together with a coating of chocolate. Once dipped the chocolate melts and the biscuit doesn’t become utterly soggy – it retains some bite. Okay so you may read this thinking I’m crazy but the dunkability of a biscuit is SERIOUS business in England. There’s nothing more disastrous than dipping a biscuit into your cup of tea and watching it disintegrate as it falls to the bottom of the mug. Now, I’ve got different favourites depending on my mood and what I fancy, but it’s usually chocolate and if I’m looking for something crunchy and comforting to dip in a cup of tea, nothing beats Chocolate Hob Nobs. That is it for today’s article. I hope you found the article interesting and learned something new in the process. Cheers! Once the chocolate is two thirds melted, don't heat anymore - just stir until it's completely melted.

Plain Hobnobs are made at the Tollcross factory in Glasgow. The chocolate variety is made at the Harlesden factory in north-west London. [9] The basic ingredients for Hobnobs are oats. Besides the milk and dark chocolate flavours, there is also the chocolate orange flavour, which sounds great (chocolate and orange mix well together) and Hobnob bars. As I have mentioned in the paragraph above, the classic Hobnobs have been voted the third most popular biscuit to dunk into tea, There are many famous biscuits from the United Kingdom, however, one stands out. Hobnobs are globally-known biscuits which are both healthy and delicious. As their name implies, Hobnob biscuits are easy to digest, which makes them perfect for people who have certain medical issues, such as chronic inflammation of the small intestine, for example. You see, “hobnob” is derived from the term hob and nob (1756) which means: “to toast each other by turns, to buy alternate rounds of drinks”. Hob and nob is in itself an alteration of the phrase hab nab, which means: “to have or have not, hit or miss”. If we go even further, hab nab is an alteration of habban, nabban which means: “to take or not take” which was a way of inviting someone to drinking. In the end hobnob means: “to drink to each other”. Another meaning of Hobnobs that the English use is to lobby in the high social class.According to McVitie’s, the chocolate side of Milk Chocolate Digestives is actually on the bottom of the biscuit. The Queen is an avid Rich Tea fan and enjoys a pot of freshly brewed Earl Grey alongside a few Rich Tea biscuits before breakfast. Her favourite tea cake is the chocolate biscuit cake, which includes eight ounces of Rich Tea biscuits. Research from McVitie’s revealed the dunking habits of Brits – showing a surge in popularity of dunking amongst younger generations, with nearly 20 per cent more young people dunking now than people aged over 55. But what do biscuits have to do with drinking? Well, they go well with beverages, just like Rich Tea: the most dunkable biscuit, for starters. Afterall, they are advertised as premier dunking biscuits. The name could also refer to the fact that you can enjoy the biscuits in honour of someone, not necessarily drink something. The name Hobnobs may also imply that the biscuits, as everything else in life, are best when shared with you family and loved ones. Are Hobnob biscuits vegan?
