Description

SylvaGrow® with Added John Innes is the culmination of 100 years of careful development that has resulted in a high-quality compost trusted by both professional and amateur gardeners.

Stem cuttings need to be in a moist environment out of direct sunlight until they have rooted so either place in a cold frame, a covered propagator or cover with polythene, using supports to prevent the polythene from touching the cuttings. Root cuttings can be placed in a cold frame or sheltered spot out of direct sunlight and can benefit from a thin layer of grit on the growing medium surface Removing peat from the ground is an unsustainable activity that can cause serious harm to the environment and damage biodiversity. For this reason, it is being phased out from horticultural use, with the sale of peat and peat-containing products in the retail horticultural sector being banned by 2024, although some uses for professional growers will still be permitted until 2030. Wood-based materials such as woodfibre, composted bark, sawdust, wood or paper waste are usually the main ingredient. Wood-based mixes can be tailored to the requirements of most plants, as they have excellent drainage properties, as well as a low pH.Raised Beds SylvaGrow John Innes No.2 can be used as part of a raised bed medium for vegetable and strawberry growing. Simply mix one part SylvaGrow John Innes No.2 thoroughly with two to three parts loam or garden soil to gain a valuable addition of organic matter, sterilized loam and nutrients. Remember to supplementary feed as instructed above in ‘Potting On’ as vegetables are heavy feeders and will respond well.

Raised Beds SylvaGrow Ericaceous can be used as part of a raised bed medium for lime-hating plants. • Simply mix 1 part SylvaGrow Ericaceous thoroughly with 3 to 4 parts acidic garden soil to gain a valuable addition of organic matter and nutrients. • Remember to supplementary feed as instructed above in ‘Potting On’. If the soil used is not acidic, (which is not recommended for best results) use up to 1 part SylvaGrow Ericaceous to 1 part soil and be particularly vigilant regarding supplementary feeding with an appropriate fertilizer for lime-hating plants. • Keep the soil moist at all times particularly during the first year as the plants are becoming established Make a hole large enough to accommodate the item to be potted and insert it, taking care that the growing medium is at about the same height on the stem as previously SylvaGrow Organic can be used as part of a raised bed medium for vegetable and strawberry growing. Simply mix 1 part SylvaGrow Organic thoroughly with 3 to 4 parts loam or garden soil to gain a valuable addition of organic matter and nutrients. Remember to supplementary feed as instructed above in ‘Potting On’ as vegetables are heavy feeders and will respond well. Planting Out John Innes (1829-1904) was a British property developer and philanthropist. When he died, he left funds to create a horticultural institute with the aim of providing “technical instruction in the principles of the science and art of horticulture and the application thereof to the industry or employment of gardening”. It was this institute that developed the compost that still bears his name today, although it never manufactured it for sale or benefited financially from it. What is John Innes compost?Ideal for potting established plants, trees, shrubs, climbers, fruit bushes, vines and plants which are to remain in the pot for a long time. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, gently tease them out of the growing medium using a dibber or pencil, taking care to handle only by the leaves.
