But, okay, Francis may not know that malaria is caused by mosquitoes, but then apparently the screenwriters don't know either because later malaria is treated as a disease you can "catch" from somebody else, like a cold. They Rode West" is an almost forgotten little western that isn't all that bad. It stars the tragic Robert Francis who was killed in 1955 just as his career was getting started.

Nevertheless his sincere concern for the health of the Indians later stands the cavalry in good stead. La Maman et La Putain [The Mother and the Whore] **** (1973, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Bernadette Lafont, Françoise Lebrun) – Classic Movie Review 12,728 26 Nov 2023 The Plot is all about a Military Doctor (Robert Francis) and His Treatment of Indians and viewed Them as, God Forbid, Equal People as seen from the Eyes of a "Medicine Man". Maracaibo ** (1958, Cornel Wilde, Jean Wallace, Abbe Lane, Francis Lederer, Michael Landon, Joe E Ross) – Classic Movie Review 12,726 26 Nov 2023

In the process, poor Robert Francis (playing Dr. Sewer) has to suffer the vexation of being called an Indian lover, a woodhawk, and a renegade - but still he remains faithful to the Hippocratic oath and he continues to treat whites and Indians as plain human beings and nothing but. Where Are You Going, Habibi? [Wo willst du hin, Habibi?] *** (2015, Cem Alkan, Martin Walde, Tuncay Gary) – Classic Movie Review 12,725 22 Nov 2023 Robert's fourth and final film was a third-billed part as an ill-fated West Point cadet in the sentimental John Ford bio-drama The Long Gray Line (1955) starring Tyrone Power as a legendary Irish-born West Point sergeant and Maureen O'Hara his altruistic wife. The picture did well. Francis arrives a newbie at a Western fort that's more or less run by Phil Carey, a Captain whose previous experiences with doctors have left him bitter. He treats Francis like a stepson, constantly harrying and hectoring him.

Love Blooms [L’amour debout] *** (2019, Paul Delbreil, Adèle Csech, Samuel Fasse) – Classic Movie Review 12,727 | Derek Winnert on La Maman et La Putain [The Mother and the Whore] **** (1973, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Bernadette Lafont, Françoise Lebrun) – Classic Movie Review 12,728Directed by Phil Karlson who later helmed the excellent GUNMAN'S WALK, this one involves an army surgeon (Robert Francis) who is at odds against his commander (Philip Carey) over the treatment of a malaria outbreak amongst the Kiowa. They Rode West is a 1954 American Western film directed by Phil Karlson. It reunites the stars of The Caine Mutiny, Robert Francis and May Wynn. It also stars Donna Reed and Philip Carey. Based on the story Wood Hawk by Leo Katcher, it was filmed at the Corriganville movie ranch, using the same fort set that was built in 1948 for the John Ford film "Fort Apache." [1] [ self-published source?] Plot [ edit ] Seward tries to prevent an epidemic and suggests that the Kiowa move off their fetid reservation to the high country. An angry Colonel Waters at first places him under house arrest but then sends him on a combat patrol that is ambushed when the two tribes combine against them. With a number of troopers killed and wounded, the command turns on Seward as a "wood hawk" (traitor). Only Laurie, with a growing compassion for the Kiowa, remains loyal to Seward. Phil Karlson (“Ladies of the Chorus”/”The Phenix City Story”/”Kid Galahad”) directs this sympathetic to the Indians western. It’s based on a story by Leo Katcher and is written by DeVallon Scott and Frank S. Nugent. Except for the attention that Robert Francis, as the Army doctor, pays to the Kiowa Indians, there's little that's distinctive about this Western. Most of the others who have commented on the movie have been on point.

Notable B-Movie Director Phil Karlson Helmed this Above Average Early Fifties, Low-Budget Western with Little Style but its Social Concerns Rode the "New" Esthetic that Shined a much needed Light on Bigotry. There are some Corny Side-Elements to be sure, but the Aforementioned Elevate this one to Respectability. They Rode West is a cavalry western and Francis is a young doctor assigned to an army post out west where both the Kiowas and Comanches are pretty hostile. The Kiowas are coming down with malaria living near a swamp as are the military, but the Kiowas have been put there by the government. La Maman et La Putain [The Mother and the Whore] **** (1973, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Bernadette Lafont, Françoise Lebrun) – Classic Movie Review 12,728 | Derek Winnert on Love Blooms [L'amour debout] *** (2019, Paul Delbreil, Adèle Csech, Samuel Fasse) – Classic Movie Review 12,727 Donna Reed is Awkward as a Centerpiece of the Soldiers Attention (one proposes to Her on sight), but the rest of the Cast do Yeoman's Work and it is left to Francis to Carry the Movie. He is Adequate, but the Strength is the Story and its Ramifications about the Mistreatment of a Defeated People thrown in the Trash Bin of History, until Recently.Stanley Kramer, the producer, said there hadn’t been a May on the screen since the days of May McAvoy and Mae Murray,” she told the AP’s Bob Thomas in 1953 interview. “He also said May was good because it couldn’t be mispronounced.” This was promising actor Robert Francis’s starring debut. He afterwards had a major role in The Caine Mutiny (1954) and made two more films- The Bamboo Prison (1954) and The Long Gray Line (1955) – before his untimely death at age 25 in a private plane crash in 1955. She appeared in uncredited roles in such films as Dreamboat (1952), My Wife’s Best Friend (1952) and The Girl Next Door (1953) before being billed under her birth name in The Farmer Takes a Wife (1953), starring Betty Grable and Dale Robertson. Relatively new to Hollywood, handsome Robert Francis was a rising young actor and deemed California's "Golden Boy" on the verge of 1950's cinematic stardom, when on July 31 , 1955, he, along with two others, perished in a private plane crash just after takeoff in Burbank, California.

May Wynn, the 1950s starlet who had a supporting role in the acclaimed Humphrey Bogart military legal thriller The Caine Mutiny, where she adopted her character’s name for her stage name, has died. She was 93. They Rode West *** (1954, Robert Francis, Donna Reed, May Wynn, Philip Carey) – Classic Movie Review 11,735 Waters and Captain Peter Blake are concerned with recovering ten stolen repeating rifles and preventing the so-far-peaceful Kiowa from leaving their reservation to join up with the warlike Comanche. Both treat the Kiowa roughly as enemies without concern for their welfare as government wards and human beings. Doctor Seward accompanies Blake to the reservation to recover the rifles and meets a white woman who has become Manyi-ten, and the tribal medicine man, Isatai, gaining compassion for the Kiowa. The woman's son has malaria; Blake tries to prevent Seward from treating him, but Seward does so anyway. THEY RODE WEST is an idealistic Western in which an arny doctor manages to get US troops to come to peace with joint Kiow and Comanche forces.

Major Vandergrif (Myron Healy is wounded in the leg by an Indian rebel. He is brought to the fort where drunken Dr. Gibson (Ralph Dumke) botches the removal of the arrow from the Major's leg and he bleeds to death. A new Doctor is sent for. This was one of only four movies that Robert Francis made before his untimely death. Columbia Pictures were building him up to be a star at the time. Donna Reed who was supposed to be Francis' love interest in the film, was actually about ten years older than him. May Wyn had played Francis' wife in "The Caine Mutiny" the same year and it was though that they were being developed as a team.
