Description

While we’re on the subject of manuals, I highly recommend purchasing a Nifty manual (link) for any radio you’ll take to the field. Interfacing with a computer? So since the '706 I've been using older rigs that I restored. Lately an FT-707 and a set of Drake's - R-7 and TR-7.

It has all been said already but I wanted to add my own review on this radio. Having owned an 857D and still owning a 897D, the 891 is a step-up in terms of quality of RX, display readability and even transmit audio. The ATAS-25 is a manually-tuned portable antenna system ideal for the FT-817, FT-897, and FT-857 transceivers. Capable of operating on the Amateur bands between 7 MHz and 450 MHz, the ATAS-25 is designed for mounting on a standard 1/4" cameratripod stud (tripod not supplied), and includes an innovative fine-tuning system allowing precise SWR adjustment in the field. I sold-off my Elecraft KX2 for this rig (and I loved that radio). I'm still happy doing so, because I have a lot more power available. With the downward sun cycle, having extra power on command is not such a bad thing! To record a message, access the Settings Mode REC SETTING, use the multi-knob to select MEM, then use again to select the CH# you want to record to. To begin recording, use the microphone PTT. To stop the recording, push the multi-knob. It takes some getting used to, but you’ll get the hang of it. For this setup, I’m going to assume you have Windows skills to install WSJT-X, know how to use device manager to view connected devices, and know how to find your microphone and phone volume settings.

I can also use the 7300 remotely from the armchair but prefer to use an actual radio but I can compare the DNR directly and the 891 beats the 7300 hands down and the ability to completely eliminate all the miles of electric fence noise I have around me is a big plus, the 7300 struggles to eliminate heavy electric fence noise, with the 891, it's completely gone. The FT-891 provides stable 100 Watts (25W AM) of high power output. High reliability is assured by the transmitters careful circuit design with efficient thermostatically-controlled Dual internal fans and the die cast heat transferring chassis. I agree that the root cause of the difficulty is separating Sota stations in a pileup is unique to the way we advise our QRG. The callers tend to be nearly coherent and no matter what the dynamic range will we split them up. Roy G4SSH with a lot more experience of CW operating always called me a few 100Hz off frequence, sneeky but effective. That said I would like to try an FT891 in field conditions to see how it performs. The other alternative, as discussed, is the KX3, or similar, with a measured dynamic range of 107dB, I believe this has the best RX measurements for any portable rig. OH8STN, Julian (2018-02-22). Loud, clear speaker – The built-in speaker provides clear, loud audio output, especially combined with this unit’s signal processing features. The FT-891 provides stable 100 Watts (Adjustable 5-100 Watts) & (25 Watts AM Adjustable 5-25 Watts) of high power output. High reliability is assured by the transmitters careful circuit design with efficient thermostatically-controlled Dual internal fans and the die cast heat transferring chassis. The NEW FT-891 offers up to 100 watts of HF/6m output power with efficient dual internal fans, coupled with Yaesu's legendary receiver design, triple conversation with a 1st IF frequency of 69.450MHz for really outstanding performance.

About Me

The FT-891 provides a stable 100 W (25 W AM) high power output. High reliability is assured by the transmitter careful circuit design with efficient thermostatically-controlled dual internal fans and the diecast chassis. Turn the radio volume knob down to a comfortable level for you. I barely want to hear what’s going on. I like to hear it just as an indicator of what’s going on. This post will be updated as I have more information to share as my adventures continue with this radio. I’m also going to try to send you to the manual for things that are already there, so keep it handy. Things You Should Do Right Out of the Box

The New FT-991A now includes a high-resolution full color 3.5" TFT Touch panel for superior operability and visibility, incorporating a High Speed Spectrum and High Resolution real-time scope with ASC (Automatic Spectrum-scope control) built right in. Finally, the FT-891 has a good ALC Meter, which is imperative when running Data Modes. I see so many operators that are overdriving their audio and splattering across the entire FT8 spectrum. They're calling CQ and wondering why no replies when they are so distorted that the WSJT-X demodulator can't decode them! Learning to use your ALC is one of the key elements to being a responsible operator. People often complain about the Yaesu menu systems, but I don’t know of an alternative when you have something so compact. If you use it for any length of time, you’ll figure things out. Anything you need to get to in a hurry can be added to the function buttons, so you can customize the interface to meet your operational needs. The 32 bit high speed floating Point DSP (max 3000 MIPS) provides effective cancellation/reduction (DNR) of the random noise that is frequently frustrating while on the HF bands. The highly optimized AUTO NOTCH (DNF) automatically eliminates dominant beat tones, and the CONTOUR, and the APF, are very effective receiver noise reduction tools during HF band operations. If anyone is looking for a really great sounding radio for SWL then if you can the 891 is well worth the extra money, look out for a 2nd hand one. The 891 is not very sensitive on Longwave but using the preamp it does help a lot.Martens, Michael (2020-08-12). "Yaesu FT-891 Setup for Digital Modes". KB9VBR Antennas . Retrieved 2022-08-10. The Yaesu FT-891 is a very compact mobile and portable transceiver for all shortwave bands and 6 m. The receiver is designed as a triple super (FM: double super) and thus enables very good values regarding sensitivity and large signal behaviour. A 3 kHz rooftop filter is fitted as standard and ensures good close selection. With the TCXO, which is also factory-fitted, the transceiver achieves a frequency stability of ± 0.5 ppm.

The New FT-991 now includes a high-resolution full color 3.5" TFT Touch panel for superior operability and visibility, incorporating a High Speed Spectrum scope with ASC (Automatic Spectrum-scope control) built right in. HamRadio 2.0 praised the large display and usability of the Yaesu FT-891, as well as its digital signal processing and filtering capabilities. He criticized the high retail price of the unit, but it’s important to note that the retail cost of this radio has decreased significantly since his initial review. Ease of use – A clear screen, large multi-function knob, and intuitive design make this mobile transceiver easy to use, especially on-the-go.

The FT-891 offers operation on all shortwave bands from 160 to 10 m including 60 m as well as on the 6 m band. The transmit power is 100 W in SSB/CW and 40 W in AM. The operating modes are SSB (USB/LSB), CW, AM and FM. Due to its small size, the radio is particularly suitable for installation in a vehicle, but can also be used at home or as a portable radio. The front panel can also be mounted remotely with the YSK-891 option. Go to the Radio tab. Select Yaesu FT-891 for the Rig. Under CAT Control, set the Serial Port to the COM number of the Enhanced COM Port number you read in device manager. Set the baud rate to the same value as you set Menu 05-06 to (4800). Data Bits – Default, Stop Bits – Default, Handshake – Default. Force Control Lines should show blanks for DTR and RTS. Stellar signal quality – This radio uses Yaesu’s bit floating point Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for crystal clear audio quality. I don't find the menus very annoying, most of them are set and forget anyway so they don't bother me and once familiar with the menus you need it's just fine. a b c d Wilson, Mark (2017-06-01).
