Set between 1813 and 1827, each novel features one of the eight children of the late Viscount Bridgerton and his widow Violet: Anthony, who is the current Viscount Bridgerton, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth. The Bridgerton family are part of British nobility and are a well respected, immensely loving, and tight-knit clan favored among high society. Parkerton, Michelle (January 29, 2021). With the normally active Billie forced into a short period of inactivity, Andrew, home on leave because of a broken arm, is the one who would usually be the designated cheerer-upper. But even though he is his normal madcap self and he and Billie fall easily into their established pattern of a couple of fast-talking hellions, Billie is rather surprised to discover that it’s George she looks for each day, and even moreso at the disappointment she feels on the occasions Andrew visits her without his brother. Like an episode of Downtown Abbey mixed with a great rom-com.” (iBooks Best Books of March on BECAUSE OF MISS BRIDGERTON)

Aww, I'm so glad I stopped torturing myself with a bad series and followed up with Julia Quinn. Her first Bridgerton series was soooo good. Apparently, this series is set before the Bridgerton series, and we get to learn a couple of things, such as the birth of "The Mallet of Death". This cookie, set by YouTube, registers a unique ID to store data on what videos from YouTube the user has seen. But then, off in the distance she saw a flash of movement, and unless the local beasts had recently made the move to bipedalism, it was quite clearly human. At the age of 23, she fell in love with a dear family friend, George Rokesby. The two married, and made permanent residence at Crake House, and went on to have three children together. Powered by a surfeit of dazzling wit and graced with a cast of unforgettable characters, Because of Miss Bridgerton is top-drawer, polished-to-perfection Quinn that will most certainly be savored by both longtime fans and new readers alike.” (Booklist (starred review) on BECAUSE OF MISS BRIDGERTON) I didn't even like the house party bit to begin with. It came out of nowhere, and that didn't make any sense to me. Supposedly it was for Andrew...? But then the house party is upon us and they're at dinner? And then playing Pall Mall? Okay, the Pall Mall scene was a little fun (though it was nowhere near the one from The Viscount Who Loved Me), and it also helped in the relationship development somewhat. However, I didn't really care for it for the most part. I also felt it could've been incorporated better as a whole (house party and all) than it was. Worst of all, though, was that it just felt like fan service to me. And, admittedly, I'm not a fan of fan service when it's so blatant, as I felt was the case here (because it feels cheesy, which makes me cringe). Aristocratic young ladies like Billie had to be presented at court before being introduced to society, and the dress code was both extravagant and strict. Even as silhouettes grew slimmer and hoops became less fashionable, ladies were required to wear wide panniers at their presentation. It was extremely difficult to move in these gowns, and ladies often had to turn sideways to fit through doorways. The gown in this photo is from the 1750s, but Billie would have worn something similar two decades later. Also, in the first half, Billie was super annoying, and George was as interesting as a cardboard box. This last bit was made even more obvious whenever George had a scene with Andrew, his little brother who reminded me so much of Sebastian from The Devil in Winter. I even started rooting for Andrew at one point, because I got bored with George.

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child, the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband... someday. At 23, Sybilla Bridgerton—known as Billie to her friends and family—is impulsive and tomboyish, riding around her father’s estate in breeches and reading agricultural treatises for fun. The latest installment of Quinn’s ( The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy, 2015, etc.) Bridgerton series opens with Billie stranded on the roof of an abandoned house, nursing a sprained ankle. She climbed a tree to rescue a cat, then fell onto the roof from the tree. She’s appalled when her nemesis, George Rokesby, Viscount Kennard, happens along and she’s forced to ask for his help. Although the two grew up on neighboring estates, Billie has always been closer to George’s three younger siblings. George, as the heir to an earldom, was always too serious and busy to romp with the other kids, and when they did interact, George and Billie always needled each other mercilessly. But after George helps rescue Billie from the roof, they begin to see each other in a new light, and gradually both are horrified to realize that their strong feelings of antipathy have given way to strong feelings of a different kind. For both of them, “this had to be the most inconvenient attraction in the history of man.” Although George and Billie are both likable characters and Quinn is an accomplished writer, the book’s exciting opening is not followed by additional exciting plot points. A brief house party and a single ball make up nearly all the events in the novel. Everything else is just the characters’ thoughts and conversations. Suzanne: I would say 3.5 stars; but this is also a book I would recommend anyone who wants something light and funny paired with fantastic writing to give a go. But it was too late. Together they watched the ladder pivot, spin, then fall with a strange balletic grace to the ground.

But he didn’t. Because apparently he couldn’t. Twenty-seven years was a long time to have the tenets of gentlemanly behavior schooled into one’s brain, and he could never be so cruel to a lady. Even her. Some of us,” she pried her teeth apart long enough to say, “are compassionate, considerate individuals.” Billie gingerly shifted her position, bending her legs so that she could rest her chin on her knees. No, I’m sure you couldn’t,” he said, and even though his voice was perfectly cordial, she was convinced he was laughing at her. Look. If your female protagonist, like 91.648790325% (I've done the research and this is an accurate stat. Trust me!) of the female protagonists out there, isn't like other girls, statistically speaking... SHE IS! If almost every book I come across talks about how its female protagonist is "not like other girls," that means she actually IS like other girls, because then those "feminine" and "girlish girl" female protagonists are in the minority. So, technically speaking, THEY are the ones who are not like other girls. George knew better than to inquire about embroidery, or watercolors, or any of a dozen other indoor pursuits commonly taken up by ladies of his acquaintance. The cat, needless to say, had made its descent with acrobatic grace, landing without injury, four paws on the roof.Julia Quinn is one of the best historical romance novelists of our time.” (Heroes and Heartbreakers on BECAUSE OF MISS BRIDGERTON) Although the plot is rather a sleepy one, the book is worth reading for fans of the Bridgerton clan and for readers who like character-driven novels. I’m giving it 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed it – it’s super cute and funny. The Bridgerton family always has a special place in my heart, and I’m glad to see that I genuinely love this one too. The characters within the 2 families (Bridgerton and Rokesbys) in this book are incredibly endearing. *happy sigh* It would also be fair to say that if Miss Sybilla Bridgerton had any idea how close he was to going for her throat, she would look a lot more frightened of him than she was of the gathering darkness.
