Reuben (right) has Down’s Syndrome. So he was trapped in a care home which his vulnerable elderly parents were unable to visit. Manni (left) was living abroad — the rules prevented him from leaving the country Aged 38, he still hadn’t established an independent life and was struggling with physical reality of having Down’s syndrome. Increasingly isolated, cut off from everyone and everything he loved, Reuben sent his older brother a desperate text message: ‘brother. do. you. love. me.’ For 26 weeks, Manni slowly assisted Reuben’s recovery and rebuilt his sense of self. “I felt that Reuben was really plummeting, and it needed to happen,” Manni says, speaking via Zoom from Reuben’s Dorset flat, where he has lived for almost two years. MAFS UK star Mark Kiley claims he was left 'unemployed and single' after appearing on the show as he brands it a 'Love Island rip-off' Immediately, Manni left his home in Spain, took Reuben out of care and moved them both into a cottage in the countryside. In the stillness of winter, they began a simple routine of walking, inching a little further each day, from the drive to the village, finally to the woods and fields. In the evenings Reuben would draw colourful images of his favourite characters from films and books with his felt-tip pens. As the months moved to spring, on a journey of pain and frustration, revelation and joy, Reuben and Manni discovered it is never too late to rebuild the bonds of brotherhood.Originally, there was no plan to share their writings and drawings publicly, says Manni. Reuben’s boldly coloured felt-tipped drawings – which include Joseph’s technicoloured dreamcoat, many lions and the lamppost from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – were a means of expression and communication at a time when words were not available. Caring, he believes, should be a well-paid career. “It’s a special gift, and so many people who are gifted carers have to move on simply because they can’t make it work financially.”
