Is this new camera set-up an improvement over the Honor 70 before it? Without being able to shoot with the two side-by-side, it’s impossible to say for sure, but I would suggest not. Given the choice, I would rather Honor had kept its hardware exactly the same and simply added OIS. Ultimately, it’s a solid setup that doesn’t disappoint, but it also doesn’t quite match the well-rounded capabilities of the Pixel 7a and the Galaxy A54 5G.
Honor promises that you’ll get up to 19.5 hours of continuous local video streaming with the Honor 90, and I found that claim to be true in my testing. The phone will comfortably last a full day in all but the most demanding use cases. Actual available memory/storage is less than this value due to system occupation. The Honor 90 Lite doesn’t get as bright as top-end phones, or even some comparable mid-rangers like the Redmi Note 12 Pro, so might not be the best choice if you live somewhere extremely sunny. I used the recently released Geekbench 6 for CPU testing (the Honor 90 landed a single-core average score of 1120 and a multi-core score of 3206) and Geekbench ML for machine learning and AI benchmarking (the phone earned an average score of 368). It’s also worth noting that I ran benchmarks with the phone in Performance mode, though it uses Balanced mode as standard, out of the box. Battery life was assessed based on real-world usage, and I measured charge time in 15-minute intervals. As great as the Honor 90 looks head-on, I can’t say that I’m a huge fan of its rear design. I don’t know why Honor thinks that two large unseemly circles make for a stylish set of camera modules, but to my eyes, it just looks like a strange use of the available space. Even the oblong module on the Honor Magic Vs felt more coherent than this. On the durability front, the Honor 90 uses what Honor describes as “deeply reinforced glass,” but this isn’t Gorilla Glass, so you’ll have to trust the company's word on that one. There’s no official dust and water resistance IP rating here, either, which puts the Honor 90 at an obvious disadvantage to comparable handsets from Samsung and Google.

The phone’s bezels are largely non-existent – which isn’t a given on mid-range smartphones – and a ‘punch-hole’ front camera cut-out (rather than an obstructive notch) at the top of its screen keeps things feeling fluid. Lastly I tested the Honor 90's selfie camera with its impressive 50MP sensor. It still takes 12MP resolution images like the Pixel 7a, but produces an overall cooler shot, in a reversal from what we saw with the Honor's rear cameras. The detail of both shots is similar, but the strength and accuracy of the Pixel 7a's portrait effect is much better here, although neither phone did a good job at capturing the edge of my glasses. Honor's been very generous with storage space on the Honor 90 — you get 256GB by default with the option of upgrading to a 512GB model. Both the Pixel 7a and the Galaxy A54 only offer 128GB, though the A54 also offers a 256GB version in some markets and microSD expansion for up to another terabyte of space. But without shelling out for a roomy microSD card or extra cloud storage, you're going to fit the most stuff onto the Honor for the price. I’ve spent the last few weeks using the Honor 90 as my main handset, and that time has thrown quite a few surprises my way, as well as a few let-downs. The question is, does the Honor 90 do just enough to stand out against its competitors? Here’s my verdict. Design and screen With a 4500mAh battery, we got a very comfortable day out of the Honor 90 Lite. With no wireless charging, wired speeds cap out at 35W. That means when matched with a compatible charger, 10 minutes gives you 15 per cent charge, half an hour fills the phone up by around 55 per cent, and an hour takes it up to 90 per cent, with around 75 minutes charging it up fully.
