About this deal

The development cards are important because once you have paid for these in your hand you get to use those gems for free on all future card grabs. There are two main strategies that tend to be very powerful for getting ahead in the early game. Splendor certainly lives up to its name, with fantastic artwork and great quality components, plus a box insert that actually works - all in all it looks splendid on the table! Read on to find out how to play, and learn some gameplay tips. The development cards represent the different elements involved in the process of turning raw gems into jewellery. There are three levels of cards, with the first showing the gem mines, the second level depicting transport routes and the artisans crafting jewels, and the third level showing the shops in beautiful Renaissance cities where the final product is sold. The last round starts once a player reaches 15 prestige points and ends right before the first player’s turn. Everyone should have played an equal number of turns right as the game ends. I played Splendor Duel multiple times to get a sense for its mechanics and their longevity, including how it compared to the original Splendor - particularly with regard to that game's two-player matches.

Take two gem tokens of the same color from the pool (provided, before the turn, there are at least four tokens left of that color). Reserve cards strategically. I like to have one spot open to grab low-cost/high value cards, one reserve spot for important or big point cards later, and one space specifically for hate drafting opponents.

Attract nobles: Once a player has acquired a certain number of development cards, they become eligible to attract nobles. Noble tiles have a specific gem and development card requirement. If a player meets the requirements, they can attract the noble and earn additional prestige points. It's for two to four players, and works well at all player counts. The only adjustment is how many poker chips you have available – you reduce the total when there are fewer players, so that there's a constrain on supply. It will certainly be slower to play with four, though – a two-player game will likely last 30 mins, but expect three players to go more like 40 mins, and four players a bit longer still, unless you're all experienced in it.

Noble cards are of varied types and are like bonus cards that can be attracted by having several development cards. There's remarkable amount of substance to Splendor considering it consists of three small piles of cards and some poker chips. And yet each turn is quite simple: you take some poker chips, or you take a card. And between turns, you think about what you're going to do next turn, and then swear at the person who buys the card you want before you get the chance. Timing is a huge part of the deal as you ponder when to reserve cards before your opponent does, or when to risk a refill. The special card abilities play a big role here as well. Getting to take an extra turn can be an important swing if timed correctly, and the one that lets you steal directly from the other player is particularly vicious, verging on a table-flip trigger if activated at a pivotal moment.

The more wealthy you are within the world of Splendor, the more likely it is for a honourable noble to come visit you. Set Up And How To Play Once a player hits 15 prestige points, the game ends at the end of the current round. The player with the most points wins. Players have a limited amount of gem tokens they can take each turn and also hold, so no hording gems in Splendor.
