About this deal

This Is the Kit – an enthralling show at the Shepherd's Bush Empire, London". Financial Times. 26 January 2018. Careful Of Your Keepers is daring and soft, cutting and warm–a wild feat of complexity and combined dispositions. There’s a shared language of the band’s family experience that is as audible as ever in these recordings, which boast beautiful instrumental performances that still leave the nuanced space required for Stables’ vocals to live at the forefront. “The album was nearly called Goodbye Bite. And in a way it still is,” says Stables. “I went for Careful of Your Keepers in the end. It’s one of my favourite songs on the album, a song that for me holds the general feeling of the album as a whole. The fragility of things. Of situations. Of relationships. Of humans. What we do to look after each other and ourselves. The passing of time and what that does to us, and how we live our lives going forward.” They are so ridiculously talented – and every member is a great producer in their own right – so it was just a matter of trying to capture the magic they make when playing live together,” Rhys says of the recording process. “Their playing is by default so thoughtful and complimentary in terms of respect to each other’s parts and to the integrity of the songs themselves that it creates a beautiful foundation of often cosmic interplay that’s always in aid of Kate’s voice and vision as a songwriter.”

This Is The Kit were a long-time favourite among various BBC Radio 6 Music DJs, which is where the musician and presenter Guy Garvey discovered them, playing their music frequently. Fellow 6 Music DJs Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe & Maconie, Cerys Matthews, and Mary Anne Hobbs have also been major supporters; DJ Marc Riley has hosted the band for three BBC live sessions to date. [2] BBC Radio 1 has offered the band spot plays via DJs Huw Stephens, Jen & Ally, and Phil Taggart. The passing of time and what that does to us, and how we live our lives going forward.” So goes the assertion of whoever wrote the press release for This Is The Kit’s latest album, yet to many listeners’ ears, what they hear may be more of the same. No amount of horns or yet another producer coming on board can alter this fact. The irony in all this is that Careful Of Your Keepers is centred around the idea of change. This Is The Kit have announced a new album, Careful Of Your Keepers, their follow-up to 2020’s Off Off On. This one was produced by Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys. This Is The Kit, the group led by Paris-based bandleader Kate Stables, today announced the band’s new album Careful of Your Keepers –produced by Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals)–will be released on June 9th, 2023, via Rough Trade Records. The album’s propulsive yet introspective lead single “Inside Outside” finds Stables as magnetic as ever, joined once again by her stalwart band of Rozi Plain(bass/vocals), Neil Smith (guitar), and Jamie Whitby-Coles (drums), and accented by a cascading horn quartet arrangement by Jesse Vernon. Guiding the ship through changing seas is producer Rhys. Stables described his role as being a “ tonesetter,” watchful and attentive to the band dynamics while making sure to always follow a hunch for where a new sound could find its place in the recording. “I’ve always loved the idea of working with him somehow, and when this album started getting planned, I realized that maybe this was my chance to reach out and see if he was up for working together,” Stables explains. “And he was! As if that wasn’t enough, he was also up for doing a bit of singing on the record, which totally blew my mind and made my year. His way with harmony and melody and the tone and quality of his voice is a totally killer combo.”

In 2006, record label Sunday Best Recordings included the band's song "Two Wooden Spoons" in its Folk Off compilation album alongside artists including Animal Collective, Tunng and Vashti Bunyan. Their song was noted as a standout with Drowned in Sound stating: "its personal touch is largely what makes This Is The Kit the British highlight, not to mention that of the compilation as a whole". [8] Following that, Sunday Best went on to release "Two Wooden Spoons" as a 7" single with the B side "Come a Cropper" in 2006. [5] The show was hosted by Garvey, who argued that their second album, Wriggle Out the Restless, deserved a Mercury Prize nomination. [6] The band also appeared in the BBC One television series Wanderlust, playing in a night club that Toni Colette's character Joy attended. The questions multiply, yet answers are perhaps simpler than one might imagine. Stables is simply one of those artists not content to sit on her laurels. She is constantly reinventing her music, challenging the conventions without ever seeming to overstep. With the help of Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys on production duties, This is the Kit defies the assumptions of what is typically done in the field of contemporary folk music. Or do they pre-empt what’s happening? Before it’s happened? Because they can see it in us before we know it ourselves? Big change that has been brewing for longer than we realise. Were we just ignoring it? Was it so deeply buried? Or did we see it all along but chose to ignore it? How much does anything change? Or is it just the way we see it that changes?

But even with a fresh slate of ideas—including, at times, some half-baked ones—spilling from their words, banjo and bass, This Is The Kit have found a way to stay true to their style in a way that doesn’t feel forced or boring. Not every upstart from the 2010s freak-folk era can say the same. Stables makes repetition work for her in more ways than one, and her outside-the-box brand of folk music still sounds like nothing else you’ve ever heard. This Is The Kit – Wriggle Out The Restless". magic, revue pop moderne (in French). 28 June 2011 .
