Of the numerous impressive aspects of Esoteric’s long-running Anthony Phillips reissue series, the one that truly boggles the mind is the huge cache of previously unreleased material that spills forth with stunning regularity. And these aren’t junky leftovers that will get one cursory listen before being shelved for eternity. These are often full discs bearing period material of such sterling quality, they could have been a part of the original releases and nobody would have batted an eyelash. Conclusion: '1984' is completely different from 'The Geese And The Ghost' and 'Wise After The Event'. 'The Geese Philipps almost discards his guitar on "Slow Dance" for synths and there's more of a Classical bent here. Before we begin to find flies in the ointment let us praise Mark Powell and Jonathan Dann who have created a fabulous and lovingly made compilation. Jonathan Dann has written half a book for the booklet telling the life and music of Ant with many new and hardly known facets. Kudos for that!the best songs to showcase Phillips' unique acoustic guitar style and reserved vocals. It's a slow song very sweet and catchy song with an atmosphere and sounds comparable to the more upbeat songs of ...And Then There Were Three.
