Description

This hazy fruit-forward pale ale from Norway’s Lervig has a juicy aroma and flavour featuring passion fruit, grapefruit and pineapple, balanced out by a little pine and grass. Implosion” is a fruity, hazy pale ale with a luxurious mouthfeel. The aroma features tropical fruits and lemon, with a touch of wheat beer aromas – bubblegum and banana.

Ghost Ship 0.5% is a solid non-alcoholic beer, with a lovely aroma and body and a decent flavour. It might even appeal to drinkers seeking a non-alcoholic alternative to an English bitter, despite the US-influence on the hop front. Drinks under 0.5% ABV aren’t covered by licensing law in the UK. They won’t make you drunk and have a similar percentage of alcohol as foods such as bananas and burger rolls. So they’re fine to drink when you’re off the booze and want an alcohol-free life.Featuring intricate fruity and herby flavours in the taste and aroma and a full-on mouthfeel, this isn’t a typical pale lager – actually, it’s more like a real ale. East Sussex’s 200-year-old brewery Harvey’s quietly released two non-alcoholic beers to go alongside its core range of traditional ales. Special Effects is second lager on this top 23 list that’s dry hopped with aromatic hops more common in an IPA or pale ale. The flavour and mouthfeel don’t quite live up to the amazing aroma. But it’s an interesting and highly enjoyable beer all the same, perfect for those colder evenings.

It features three varieties of New Zealand hops alongside Lager and Vienna malts. The result is an earthy, fruity yet malt-forward aroma and flavour featuring caramel, wholemeal toast, digestive biscuit, lemon and grapefruit. These are my top 24 non-alcoholic lagers and bottom-fermenting beers, followed by the other lagers I’ve reviewed. 1. Insel “Skippers” (0.5%) Pilsner Svart/Hvit from @nogneo . Treacle, coffee, roasted malts and vanilla on the nose, restrained bitterness with more roasted grains, coffee and a slight caramel sweetness as we taste. Lovely hefty body. Could easily pass for a full-fat stout free-beer.co.uk/nogne-o-svar… #alcoholfree @FreeBeer_UK - Sep 5 Adnams, the Suffolk-based brewer and distiller, has launched a new alcohol free version of its best selling beer Ghost Ship Pale Ale. Created to meet the rapidly growing demand for low alcohol beer, Ghost Ship Alcohol Free has all the same flavours and aromas as Ghost Ship but is no apparition, treating pale ale lovers to 100% of the taste but at 0.5% ABV – spooky! The result is “Ghost Ship 0.5%”, a low alcohol version of its popular pale ale of the same name. And it really is the same beer – unlike breweries that halt fermentation early or use a yeast that doesn’t produce much alcohol to make their alcohol-free beers, Adnams takes the full-strength beer and filters out the alcohol. There’s some classic flowery, spicy and fruity hop aromas and a light body with gentle carbonation. Acidic and tart, the cranberry/raspberry/passion fruit flavours in the aroma and taste get your mouth watering. And, the mouthfeel is juicy and creamy, with smooth carbonation. Labelled as a lager-style beer but more like a saison or Belgian wheat beer, this is one of hundreds of beers produced over the years by Denmark’s Mikkeller brewery. Fruitier than it looks thanks to the esters created by Mikkeller’s low-alcohol yeast, “Drink’in the Snow” is a great option all year round.

Hallo, Ich Bin” is Mikkeller’s attempt at an alcohol-free Berliner Weisse, a sour beer that originates from – you guessed it – Berlin. The Bramling Cross hops in this one add some fruity flavours to an aroma unsurprisingly dominated by coffee and dark malts. If you like your beers fruity and stuffed full of new-world hops, you’ll love Big Drop’s Paradiso IPA – especially if you liked brewery’s original pale ale. This beer’s also dry hopped to capture the aroma and flavours of the hops, without making it overly bitter. This technique is especially useful when using Citra hops, as the bitterness they create when added to the boil can be quite harsh. The flavours are understated yet effective, with roasted barley providing a foundation for vanilla and coffee, plus a little fruitiness.Sure, there are still some terrible ones out there. But there are also loads of brands producing quality non-alcoholic beers and alcohol-free lagers, some of which rival their higher-ABV equivalents in taste, aroma and body. The body and flavours aren’t quite as impressive as some of the other beers in this list. But the mix of caramel malts and fruit in the aroma make up for its shortcomings in the mouth. Upflow is an Australian brewery. But this “Toasted Malty Tide” beer is more akin to a traditional English bitter. The variety now spans craft styles such as alcohol-free IPA, non-alcoholic American Pale Ale, Amber and Golden ales with all the heart and soul of a full-bodied craft brew.

With a smooth mouthfeel despite high carbonation, it’s sure to be a hit with traditional ale drinkers, despite its modern, hoppy aromas. And while the flavours on tasting don’t quite measure up to the aroma, I definitely won’t be swerving this one if I spot it at a music venue. Today, it’s still in the Maisel family. And although it’s branched out into American-style craft beers, it’s still most famous for its wheat beers. St Peter’s in Suffolk produce an excellent zero percent stout and offer a refreshing Golden Ale that’s also available as a non-alcoholic organic beer. If you love your alcohol-free drinks, you might be wondering why so few traditional breweries are producing low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beers when the popularity of alcohol-free drinks seems to be growing by the day.Yet – probably because of well-known beers like Oakham’s single-hop ale “ Citra”– lots of people have heard of the Citra hop even if they don’t know much about it. It might even be in your favourite alcohol-free beer – Infinite Session’s “ Pale” and Adnams’“ Ghost Ship Alcohol-Free” are among many non-alcoholic ales that feature it. There’s some rye in the malt bill in this beer, which could explain the pleasant dry finish that leaves you wanting to drink a little more. Lost AF is another lager that uses hops more commonly found in modern pale ales, this time the Citra hop.
