The built-in LED light is actually super useful (again, a Braun plus). I assumed it was like a bullshit marketing thing, but trying to epilate without that extra light on my legs was basically impossible. At worst, feels like the little electric zap I mentioned before. It's like your brain registers the pain, and then as soon as you brace for it to get worse, it's already over. Definitely less painful than threading. Epilating is known for being slightly painful (you are pulling hair right from the root, after all) but the good news is any pain normally decreases each time you epilate.

Hot tip: I also noticed that epilating definitely hurt more when I tried to do it right before I started my period as opposed to when I used it afterwards. Science says that your pain receptors are more active before and during your period, which causes you to be more sensitive to pain than usual. So, my recommendation is to try to avoid epilating during that time of the month. We looked at how effective each device was at removing hair (and minimising pain), how easy it was to control and how simple the process was. The only downfall would really have to be the pain, as well as the time it takes. But, I’m justifying it in the way that shaving has to be done every few days, so if you factor that into three weeks, spending a few hours on the epilator at the beginning of the week is child’s play in comparison. The all-new shape with anti-slip grip comes extra handy in the shower, and provides an easier, more precise movement – perfect for removing hair in those hard to reach areas.I’d read online that pubic epilation hurts less if you soften the skin while in the shower or bath with warm water, and because the Braun Silk Epil 9 is waterproof, that’s exactly what I did. Let’s just say, it didn’t help at all, though. My legs are covered in tiny baby ingrowns that I just never care enough about to fix, but the epilator kind of popped them open. Seeing the rest of my legs so smooth made me want to take better care and exfoliate better so that next go-around, I can have even smoother legs. Using either chemical or physical exfoliants are fine here, as long as they're not irritating, says Susan Bard, MD, a dermatologist in NYC. I loved the Braun epilator’s flex head as it really helped get to those hard to reach hair removal areas.

For what it's worth, my personal experience did not find epilating wet to be any more soothing, but contorting around in my iron maiden of a single shower stall may have impacted this. How to deal with the ingrown hairs My skin, which is by NO means sensitive, was covered in a buuuuunch of tiny red welts after my first epilation sesh. It was very jarring to see, but it went away after a few hours. I mean, you do you. I can't vouch for every epilator, since I'm kinda convinced only the Braun Silk-Epil 9 Flex will be as painless as it was, but here's my pro/con list to help you decide. An epilator won’t catch every single hair though (like a high-quality razor would), so if you’re looking for perfection, epilating may not be the right choice. Shaving is also pain-free, whereas epilating pulls hair from the root, which can cause slight discomfort. Do epilators permanently remove hair? It's expensive. Everyone has different pain tolerances, and while I'd def classify myself as a pain weenie, who's to say that the Braun Silk-Epil 9 will be just as painless for you? It's definitely an investment to make and one that you might not be able to walk away from if you throw down so much cash for it. Testers were given the choice to trial the device in either wet and/or dry conditions (if suitable for both), and were provided with all the attachments that come with the device, so they had the option to use it on all or specific areas of the body. SensoSmart™ technology guides your epilation with a red light to ensure the right amount of pressure is applied.

Epilating wet is going to be a less painful than dry, as there's water to coat and comfort the skin, according to dermatologist Dr. Michele Green, MD. However, "dry epilation is more efficient because the hairs are not flatted down by water," she says, so the epilator can catch and pull each hair better. Here it is in slow-mo — it’s also spitting out little water droplets because i just cleaned it, fyi. ' Does epilating hurt? Get ready for a day at the pool without the hassle of waxing, using the fully flexible head for effortless epilation. No pain. No appointments. Just weeks of salon-smooth skin.

Ratings and Reviews

You can buy epilators with heads specifically designed for different areas of the body too — such as arms, bikini lines and underarms — to really get your money's worth. Is it better to epilate long or short hair?
