About this deal

This is a must-know technique if you sew clothing or focus on pattern-making. However, first, you need to learn the ins and outs of draping and what you need to do in your own sewing room. Cross-grain : section of fabric that runs perpendicular to the lengthwise grain that runs from selvage to selvage This video helps to introduce fashion designers to the basic concept behind draping for outfit creation. It provides easy-to-follow points that show how to use the tapes optimally and eliminate some of the stress that comes with pattern drafting.

Trim the Tape 1” beyond each side edge. Fold under the ends so the folded edge sits just inside the side hem. Once you pull the cords to your desired width, the cord is knotted at both ends, and the width is secured. This is very handy if the window or other opening is an unusual size and/or if you rarely want to open or close the covering. You can use a single panel, gather it to the exact width, hang the panel, and it will stay as-is. When everything looks the way you want it to, don’t remove the muslin yet – first mark the muslin, while it’s still on the dress form, so that you can later see where the seam lines and darts will be located on the fabric. We support JPEG, GIF and PNG images. Files must be no more than 1MB. Both the image height and the image width must be between 60 and 3500 pixels.Alternate draping with flat pattern-making. Although draping and flat pattern-making are diametrically opposed in many ways, you can use both techniques simultaneously. Draping is helpful when you need to take a more practical approach to determine those measurements; flat fabric or paper pattern-making works a little better when you know your measurements in advance. Cut the tape 7½” longer than the finished width of your curtain panel. Pin the resulting length of tape to the top edge of the curtain. Center the tape within the hem, and adjust side to side so the first loop is about 1” in from the left edge. Each of the above mentioned steps or techniques are designed to help in making the process of draping easier and develop the draping skills. If you already have a final fabric in mind, do some research before you begin draping to find a specific weight of muslin that will fall and fold just like the fabric that you will use in the finished garment. The last step is common across various designing techniques. Here, trim off any excess fabrics that may remain after it is finished with draping. The raw edges of the draping should always be hidden neatly in the seams, so that it looks perfect and clean. Figure 8: Trimming

The next step is truing – the process of taking the muslin off of the dress form, laying it out flat on a table, and using rulers and design curves to connect and finalize the markings you made in the previous step.

Next, take the muslin and cut out the various pieces of your design from it. This includes your sleeves, bust cup, and all other pieces. In this process initially dresses are draped on dummy with a cheaper quality fabric so sometimes the look of the final garment cannot be assessed correctly by this method. The biggest advantage of draping is that it allows room for customization. A dress or a specific garment can be made as per the concerned person measurements and requirements. If you have a size in mind already, cut and prepare the pieces of muslin, marking important reference lines like grain lines.

The dress form draping technique sharpens the designer’s imagination, enabling them to implement ground-breaking ideas in the field of fashion design. The ability to customize is the drapery’s main benefit. Additionally, if you only perform trials before cutting the fabric, there is less fabric waste. Draping also makes it possible to create paper patterns and designs that can be used to inspire the design of the subsequent dress. What is the History of Draping? In addition, the loops of the Rod Loop Tape are evenly spaced, which means when your panels are pushed open, the resulting gathers will be even. When you just have an open channel in the fabric, it is much harder to get a pretty flow along the top of a panel, and if there’s more than one panel, the gathers are never even from one panel to the next. Rod Loop Tape can solve this problem. And, as shown below, it’s easy to pleat the tape to get an exact fit. The process of draping also allows you to make different paper patterns and designs which can be used further for idealization of the next dress.
