Most sources recommend a peat-based potting soil mixed with about 1/3 perlite to improve drainage. This works fine for the plant, but unfortunately peat isn’t the most sustainable potting material. You could try using coco coir instead, as it should also hold water quite well. Potting The grow pot height is standardised (normally 12cm or 19cm) and shown on the size option for each hydroculture plant. Ensure the external height of your decorative pot is at least 2-3cm higher than the grow pot height of the hydroculture plant. Each leaf is attached to a reddish-pink stem and newly formed leaves are rolled highlighting their purple undersides. This brings even more color to this low-growing and compact plant, which matures to around 12 inches tall. White insignificant flowers forming in spring, though houseplants rarely flower. Like other plants, we do not recommend you repot your plant right after purchasing it. We know you want to transfer it to a better-looking pot, but this may stress the plant even more and hinder it from coping with its new environment. Allow your White star to become comfortable before repotting it. Some common calathea plant problems are leaves turning yellow, edges of leaves turning brown and brittle, curling leaves, root rot, limp and floppy plant, and stunted growth. Pests, including spider mites and mealybugs, are also common. In addition, Grey mold and Bacterial Leaf Spots are two prevalent diseases in Calathea. Calathea’s stunning patterns

The causes are quite similar to those of curling Calathea leaves. Natural shedding of lower leaves. As a plant grows, it will reabsorb nutrients from lower leaves, turning them yellow and then crispy and brown before they drop. This is normal, so if it’s only lower leaves and they’re not yellowing at an alarming rate, you’re likely fine. Because Calatheas are loved for their gorgeous leaves, it’s heartbreaking if the patterns start to fade. The following issues are most strongly associated with this symptom:

Gently flushing your plant with room temperature water will always help keep these pests at bay. At the first sign of these insects, you can opt to spray the affected area with diluted alcohol solution. This will evaporate the moisture within the body of these small insects. Soil Depth: When repotting allow a little room for the roots to spread. The soil should not be so shallow that without drainage the roots will sit in water, nor so deep that the water drains below the roots leaving the plant to dry out. Plant is cranky. Calatheas seem quite sensitive to changes like being moved (like when you buy it), repotting and division. If you just did any of those things, give your plant a few weeks to come around.

When growing your White star, remember that the roots do not grow extensively and are fragile and fibrous. The pot must have enough room to grow and allow the plant to become rootbound at the same time – don’t go with a pot that is too big.

The location will influence how well your plant will thrive. Calathea beauty star specifically appreciates warmer temperatures that hover around 65-85 °F (18-29 °C).
