About this deal

Shim either end to ensure the sistered joist sits snugly against the old joist. You may have difficulty getting a full-sized sister joist to fit on either bearing end against the old joist. It is likely your old joist has shrunk slightly or cupped, resulting in a narrower space between the beam or bearing wall and the subfloor above. The two 50mm square plate washers play a crucial role in distributing the load evenly across the joist, reducing the risk of localized stress points. They are designed to fit snugly against the timber, providing a stable and balanced support for both the bolt and the joist. M12 bolts (min. 3mm x 38mm M12 washers under head and nut) for 38mm, 44mm, 47mm and 63mm wide sections Install the posts and beam at the appropriate distance. Slide the new joist onto the existing beam and sister it to a joist with appropriate fasteners. Since both ends of the new joist will be supported, the sistering overlap is only the width of the beam plus any existing cantilever. Repairing or Strengthening a Joist We can't tell from here how your rim joist is attached. It doesn't matter how well the ledger is attached to the rim joist if the rim joist isn't well-attached to the house. Normally, the rim joist doesn't really carry any weight, its function is to keep the joists from falling over and give something to attach the bottom of the sheathing too.

That member is essentially half the size of the adjacent members (because of the notch), but it’s carrying half the load because it’s between the adjacent members. If you must sister a joist, I’d use a 2x4 and nail (or screw) with 10d nails placed about one inch from the top edge and one inch from the bottom edge and stagger the nails so the wood does not split. Make sure there’s 5 nails each side of notch. Some Building Codes require sistering to extend a minimum of 4-feet on either side of the affected area and have ½” bolts in a ‘W’ pattern for a stronger connection. Other Codes identify that the only acceptable way to sister a joist is to double it full-length with both ends of the new joist supported on bearing points. Sistering is used to fix wobbly floors, sagging floors, or rotten joists. In most homes, a wobbly floor is caused by an oversized joist span, joists spaced too far apart, or joists that are failing. A sistered joist in any of these instances will correct a wobbly floor. The reasons for sistering a joist include: For a full sister or doubled joist, three 16d common nails every 16-inches is acceptable. It should be noted that hammering will put additional stress on the piece being sistered. You may choose to predrill and use two 3-inch lag screws or 4-inch bolts every 24-inches instead. The most difficult part about sistering a joist is that there is no clear consensus – such as building code – to guide us on how to go about the process. Every scenario is different, and the fix for your joists may be very different from someone else’s.Removing the rim joist will expose the ends of the joist. If they don’t extend beyond the beam, a cantilever extension is possible. Technically, a joist may extend 40% of its supported span past the beam. The residential building code does not have a section on sistering joists because it is not standard in new residential construction. Homes are meant to be built on single joists at set spacing – sistering only comes into play if the home has been damaged or improper construction techniques were used, which the building code does not cover. The nailing pattern for sistering depends on the type of sistering, and how much space you have to work. Swinging a hammer between joists may be difficult depending on joist spacing and ground clearance. It’s also often more difficult to drive nails into aged wood. Likely, you will only be able to partially sister the joist, as LVLs are used primarily in longer spans that dimensional lumber cannot reach. In that case, follow the same procedure as you would when sistering dimensional lumber. Conclusion

The nail pattern for double sistering or sandwiching a joist is similar to when sistering a damaged joist, except it should be done from both sides. Alternatively, use two 4” or 4½” lag screws in a ‘W’ pattern, screwing from both sides to bond the tripled section together. Two 5-inch bolts could be used instead of nails or lag screws with two every 12-inches or less, depending on the repair length. Conclusion Use of nails and bolts is preferred to screws. The shear holding power of nails is far superior to screws, and joists deal with significant shear – vertical – forces.

Sistered joists do not have to run the length of the original joist. While no specific rule exists for how long a sistered joist should be, a commonly held rule is that a sistered joist ⅔ the length of the original is adequate – only if you cannot run the joist the entire length. A non-full sized sister joist will still fix sagging in a joist, which is commonly referred to as deflection. It is recommended that sistered or double exterior joists be covered with a waterproof membrane or tape. The material will prevent moisture and debris from becoming trapped between the planks and causing rot. When partially sistering a joist, remember that the way you fasten the joists together is of utmost importance as the fasteners will carry the load to the original joist. In particular, the fasteners at either end of the sistered joist, provided they are not bearing, will experience the most force and have more fasteners than the center of the sistered joist. How to Sister Joists My idea was also to have 6x2 beams (not bolted to the existing 8x2 joists) running next to every second existing joist . These new 6x2 beams will be raised to the new height of 2" above exist. joists.

If you do use bolts, I'd use lots of 1/4" bolts and big washers, and again in a "W" pattern. The idea here is for the bolts to clamp the new piece tightly to the old, not for the bolts to bear the load in shear. High-Quality Materials: Each component in this set is crafted from premium materials, guaranteeing durability, longevity, and resistance to corrosion and weathering. Most I-beams will have a 1” difference between the web and the outer edge of the flange. You’ll have to fill that in ½” plywood or OSB in two layers. When doing so, stagger the pieces, so gaps do not overlap. Once you’ve filled in the web, use ¾” plywood as the sister joist, being sure to continue to stagger your plywood over the top of one another. Nevertheless, the roof system indicates an addition was added exactly where this roof joist was added...see change in roof sheathing in bottom picture. The roof structure is not a truss, but members have been added to help support the roof.Whilst timber floors and their connection details should be designed by a competent person, the ‘Eurocode 5 Span Tables (4th edition)’ published by TRADA offers good advice on typical connection details for solid timbers, such as the sizes of nails or bolts and their location and centres. Some of the key parts of this guidance document in relation to connecting trimmers or trimming joists are summarised below: Sistering joists is a fairly straightforward process but can become laborious if you have to remove many utilities or the joist does not fit against the original due to shrinkage. In those instances, a shorter joist of the original width is preferred to a longer joist that is not as wide. Here’s how to sister a joist: 1. Remove Wiring and Other Obstructions Load Distribution: The two 50mm square plate washers distribute the load evenly across the joist, reducing stress concentrations and minimizing the risk of structural failure. The M12 nut is included to securely fasten the bolt to the joist. Its reliable quality ensures a tight connection, preventing any unwanted movement or weakening of the joint. If there are no anchor bolts, you'd use some sort of concrete anchor like a sleeve anchor, drilling a hole through the sill and into the concrete, placing the anchor through them both, then tightening.
