While the machine’s design feels well-conceived and all parts fit (almost) seamlessly, I couldn’t help but feel like something will end up breaking sooner rather than later.

The machine will begin to grind, and then brew-when the brew gets to just about the level you are looking for in your cup, press the same button (in this case, the small button), but do not hold it, to stop the brewing process. An acceptable espresso which is a good base for a longer coffee, but it’s not up there with the best manual machines’ shotsWhile I’m here, I’ll also remind you that there’s no water filter included with the Brera. That’s a little surprising, but given the machine’s price I can’t complain. The machine is still compatible with the Intenza water filter, but you’ll need to buy it separately.

However, the Brera does include the next best thing: a memo function. Once you’re done honing your latest espresso settings, you’ll have the option to save them for next time. Once you’ve run through the basics of setting up the machine – like plugging it in, turning it on, filling up your bean hopper and reservoir – it’s time to brew some espresso. You want to dial in your machine to achieve that perfect shot– The DeLonghi Magnifica offers accurate control over your espresso by letting you adjust shot volume and strength. It also has a built-in burr grinder, and comes with a Pannarello-style steam wand. Moving onto the interior, the Brera has a rinse cycle when you switch on or off the machine. This is fine for basic maintenance, but you’ll need to regularly clean components such as the brewing unit. Fortunately, this has been designed to be easy to remove. It's the same with the dosage, you don't really know how much coffee you're selecting to grind, and once you've found what you think is the right dosage, again from trial and error, if you want to be able to ensure you stay on this settings, you'd have to add a mark yourself since there are no markings around the dial.
