About this deal

Anne Cleeves is a recent favorite author. I am now on her 3 series. Shetland, a BBC production has been a favorite of mine prior to starting the books. In the eighth and final Shetland murder mystery, an English family move to Shetland, eager to give their autistic son a better life. But when a young nanny’s body is found hanging in the barn of their home, rumours of her affair with the husband begin to spread like wild fire. With suspicion raining down on the family, DI Jimmy Perez is called in to investigate, knowing that it will mean the return to the islands of his on-off lover and boss Willow Reeves, who will run the case. Perez is facing the most disturbing and personal investigation of his career. Is he ready for what is to come? This is the third novel in Ann Cleeves' Shetland series. An elderly lady is shot in what seems to be a tragic accident and detective Jimmy Perez is called to investigate. The silent islanders provide little information, and Jimmy finds instead a tangled bitterness between two feuding families that has lasted generations. Can he uncover the mystery?

Shetland is adapted from the novel Red Bones. The book is based around an archaeological dig and the mystery starts with the murder of the elderly woman who crofts the land where the dig is happening. The book and the TV drama is about digging into the past to find answers to family disagreements. And in the TV adaptation there's the wonderful climax of the Viking fire festival 'Up Helly Aa'. Douglas Henshall doesn’t look like my Jimmy, who is dark and Mediterranean. But Douglas brings a quiet authority and an ability to be still and to capture attention that is absolutely right.

Cleeves is expert at depicting hardscrabble island life, parental expectations and disappointments and emotionally charged silences. Thoughtful readers should give Perez a try. THE AUTHOR: Ann is the author of the books behind ITV's VERA, and the BBC's SHETLAND, which was aired in December 2012. Ann's DI Vera Stanhope series of books is set in Northumberland and features the well loved detective along with her partner Joe Ashworth. Ann's Shetland series bring us DI Jimmy Perez, investigating in the mysterious, dark, and beautiful Shetland Islands...

If you're planning a visit to Shetland, or perhaps even considering a more permanent move, then why not sign up to one or more of our monthly newsletters? From travel inspiration and the latest island events, to news, recipes, giveaways, current vacancies and more...I haven't worked with Davy before, though I did come to Shetland with him and the script editor before he started writing and that gave us a chance to share ideas about the characters and the story. I think it's a very strong script, which captures the essence of the book. Location is key because there is nowhere else like Shetland, it has its own traditions and culture, and can feel like another country. The fact that these islands, quiet for centuries, are now dealing with the influx of 'incomers' to work in the oil business makes for great contrasts in landscape and people.
