Secondly, according to Arran Master Distiller James MacTaggart, they wanted to create a new design that would help them clearly distinguish between whisky made at Lochranza Distillery (where Arran whisky is currently produced) and their newly opened Lagg Distillery, dedicated to the creation of peated Arran whisky. I tried this Arran to complete the Cask Finish series. Within this series he is in my view the worst and not really recommended. The whisky is not round, flat and with alcoholic impact - 11.05.2019 Sweet and round, with mild foresty peat. Caramelized fruit notes of red apples, peaches, mango. Fresh-baked cherry pie, toffee, and a little bit of custard. Flamed cinnamon, cocoa powder, some of that characteristic Arran ginger, and some fragrant creamy matcha. An autumn walk in the forest, surrounded by dead leaves and punky logs. There’s a tiny bit of a meaty note in the peat, like a distant spicy salami. It’s been a busy couple of years with the new distillery commencing production, paving the way for the creation of a very different style of Arran malt. Lagg will produce a heavily peated spirit, in the tradition of the old illicit stills that once peppered the coves of the island’s south coast. There’s even been talk of creating a blended malt using whisky from both distilleries, north and south. Medium mouth feel. Nice jammy component. Pepper, toffee, some fresh baked cake. A bit of heat, but nothing punishing. Really balanced between fruity and jammy and bread-y and pepper-y. I like it.

Bottled at cask strength without coloring or filtering, this should be an interesting one to try. Let's dive in. Based on the tasting notes I was looking forward to trying this but unfortunately the sample was a major disappointment. When I first heard about Arran whisky and tried learning about the brand, I was intrigued by the different contradictions that stood out throughout the course of their history.They said the old design had served its purpose, so they wanted to reimagine the bottling design to make it modern and more effective in communicating their brand values, like the importance they place on the soft water they use at the distillery – on the new design, this is shown by the “ripples” on the bottle’s shoulder.
