Classic fiction, narrative poetry, Denmark, Old English, monsters, dragons, bravery, intrigue, betrayal, loyalty Will fire imaginations and elicit the heart-pumping, wide-eyed response that has kept this tale alive and vigorous through the ages.” — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review) I’ve used this text and resources with Year 4 several times and they are tried and tested winners at getting even the most reluctant of pupils to do some creative writing.

Beowulf is one of the most important texts in Old English and is believed to date from somewhere between 975 and 1025 - around the time of Alfred the Great. The author is unknown. To touch the lives of children, to witness their listening and reading silence, is reward enough in itself. This is simply the icing on the cake.” I enjoyed reading Beowulf – It feels so real it’s like your experiencing it all with them. I’d recommend this book to boys who like adventure, heroes and monsters.

We just didn't enjoy the story. We read through it because it fits our history, but it's as gory as I remembered, and taken out of the Old English, there seemed less reason to read it together, anyway. In fifth-century Denmark, a murderous monster stalks the night, and only the great prince of the Geats has the strength and courage to defeat him. Beowulf's terrifying quest to destroy Grendel, the foul fiend, a hideous sea-hag and a monstrous fire-dragon is the oldest surviving epic in British literature. Artfully retold and magnificently illustrated, this companion volume to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is made instantly accessible to children by a formidable children's book partnership. Text rationale: When there is danger in Her e ot , Beowulf (Prince of the G eats ) set s o f f to save the day from the villainous monsters. Michael Foreman is one of the world's leading illustrators. He has written and illustrated numerous children's books and won several major awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal, the Kurt Maschler Award, and the Bologna Graphics Prize.

When I was reading this book I felt different every minute. I felt happy , then the next minuet I felt sad . W hen Beowulf had to face the monsters , I felt like he was definitely going to die this time … A retelling in prose of the Anglo-Saxon epic about the heroic efforts of Beowulf, son of Edgetheow, to save the people of Heorot hall from the terrible monster, Grendel You can also read about his life in War Child to War Horse,a collaborative biography with Maggie Fergusson. Home > Michael Morpurgo has thrilled and delighted huge numbers of young readers since becoming a children’s author in the early 1970s," Wood said. "Action for Children’s Arts is delighted to recognise Michael’s outstanding contribution by presenting him with the J M Barrie Award 2016. His work will undoubtedly, like Peter Pan, stand the test of time, making him a truly worthy recipient of this award."

There is a Spelling Seed session for every week of the associated Writing Root. Coverage: Word List Words I can't remember reading too much about Beowulf. Essentially because this annoying feeling I have towards poems. So, yeah, I wouldn't dare to read the original translated poem and that's the reason why I chose this little one as a starting point. It's a retelling and it's beautifully written. And even though I would like to put it under the "Norse" label and get on with it, it isn't. Supposedly because Old Norse literary tradition doesn't begin until the 12th century in Iceland and the Beowulf manuscript was produced between 975 and 1025. Having said this, it would fall under the "Germanic" category as far as I can tell. ⠀ Children LOVE the language and horror elements of this story and produce quality written outcomes as a result. Beowulf is just a normal warrior who is str ong and likes to help the k ing Hrothgar and his people – who w ere being terrorised by a horrible monster called Grendel and his gruesome mother. Beowulf knows he is putting his life in danger but is still willing to do what he has to do to save the people .Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning. Some off the illustrations are still running around in my head. I would recommend this to boys age 10+ . I loved Beowulf it’s a great book – you would definitely like it !
