It is a novel of fathers and mothers and sons and daughters that tells the story of the real-life Colombian film director Sergio Cabrera. Set during a retrospective of his films in Barcelona in 2016, the story moves from the Spanish Civil War to exile in Latin America, and from the Cultural Revolution in China to the guerrilla movements of late 1960s Latin America. A novel with many ideas that lead in several directions, but I’m not sure they coalesced for me in any satisfactory way.

The manuscript of the final novel in the series was centered on “earth”. Olivia said it was to be called “Strata”. But the posthumous manuscript that Julio is offered from Alicia’s friend Olivia is titled “A Private Language”. In Austral, Carlos Fonseca is pouring out labyrinths. Austral by Carlos Fonseca will be published on 1st June 2023, in a translation by Megan McDowell. Costa Rican-born Fonseca’s work has been selected for Granta’s Best of Young Spanish-Language Novelists and Encyclopaedia Britannica’s Shapers of the Future. Austral is his first novel to be published in the UK. MacLehose Press is planning a major PR campaign on publication. After attending high school at Colegio San Ignacio in Puerto Rico, he attended Stanford University where in 2009 he graduated with a degree in Comparative Literature. It’s symbol, mentioned several times in the book, is the spiral. The words “enigma, “spiral”“labyrinth” and “puzzle” all come up in the book. A beautifully knotted novel which unfolds with every traced layer of its deeply affecting narrative along side a meditation on memory, mystery and vanishing. Sebaldian in its turns, Austral is a novel of profound questions." The writing is meticulous, precise, nuanced when necessary, always attentive to the novel's changes of pace - El Pais Many characters in the book are in some form translators or creators engaged in solitary work, who ultimately give up language in favor of another activity or suffer from their contradictions and irremediable in-betweenness.
